However, his grandson, Qianlong, whose dynasty spanned most of the 18th Century (1735-1795), with a huge budget, collected throughout his 60-year reign. This resulted in a substantial expansion for English merchants and makers. An observation by the missionary Valentine Chalier in 1736 ' As for clocks, the Imperial palace is stuffed with them…..there must be more than 4000 from the best masters of Paris and London…'. As Dr. White notes in his extensive book English Clocks for the Eastern Markets, Qianlong was simply the greatest collector of Western clockwork there has ever been. From the 1750s onwards, commercial activity in the West focused on objects that could be exported to ease the balance of payments between East and West, fuelled by the heavy demand in the West for exotic Asian wares, such as porcelain, textiles, lacquer and of course tea. The form of case is known as the 'scroll angle' design and was most used by Henry Borrell and John Mottram.Two similar clocks, with variations to the one offered, were sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, Magnificent Clocks for the Chinese Imperial Court from the Nezu Museum, 27 May 2008, lot 1512 & 1515. Another similar by Mottram was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 6 December 2011, lot 284.

A Continental Silver and Enamel Cigarette-Case, Stamped '900', Possibly Austrian, Early 20th Century, shaped oblong, the hinged cover enamelled with a scene of a capercaillie in a landscape, 9cm high, gross weight 4oz 8dwt. Stamped to edge of of base '900'. There are some scratches to the enamel on the cover. There are some minor surface scratches overall.
A Red Stone, Pearl and Enamelled Brooch, the cruciform shape inset with red stones, button pearls and green and black enamel and with a similarly enamelled baroque pearl pendant drop, measures 5.6cm by 8.3cm see illustration . The brooch is in good condition, although has possibly had previous repairs/alterations. The red stones have not been positively identified due to the limitations of the setting, possibly synthetic red spinel. It fastens with a pin and revolver catch. Gross weight 19.9 grams. An Enamel and Diamond Brooch, circa 1850, a flower basket design inset with rose cut diamonds on an oval blue enamel panel, within a border of rose cut diamonds, measures 2.6cm by 3.3cm see illustration . The brooch is in good condition. It fastens with a pin and hook catch. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; caratweight 1.00 carat, colour I/J/K, clarity SI2/I1/I2/I3. Gross weight 10.2 grams. CR made 5th September 2019
A 19th Century Richardsons opaline frosted glass goblet, the round funnel bowl with floral vitrified enamel decoration above a multi knopped stem and domed foot with gilded foliage, height 16.5cm, with a late 19th Century opaline glass vase in the manner of Richardsons, of footed baluster form with wide flared rim, with enamelled floral decoration and gilt foliate scrolls, height 22cm. Two Victorian silver cased key wound pocket watches, both with white enamel dials, black Roman numeral dials, subsidiary seconds dials and silver dust covers, engraved decoration to backs of cases, one marked Special Rated Lever, 22125, Albert Waterfall, Chester 1894, 51mm across case, and another by Samuel Freeman, Chester 1866, 51mm across case, together with no 10 key, combined total overall 7.7toz. (2) Notes: both watches in working condition, both wind and set well, both keep time across 30 min test.
