Illustrated by Elizabeth Adams and David Redstone, Bow Porcelain (1981), col. pl.F, and discussed at page 126, where it is noted that the dish is copied directly from a Japanese prototype. The hen and cockerel are also common in Chinese iconography but the three-clawed dragons on the border of the dish indicate a Japanese origin. A similar dish from the Judy and Phelps Bell Collection was sold by Bonhams on 20 November 2019, lot 206. Both dishes exhibit a pleasing smattering of cobalt blue under the glaze. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A dish of very similar size and form, but moulded with ribs, was sold by Bonhams on 26 November 2014, lot 86. Los 489

A magnificent pair of Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester ice pails and covers by Thomas Baxter, circa 1814-16Of generous size and classical form, the twin handles modelled as scrolling leaves picked out in gold, supported on square bronzed and gilt plinths, finely painted with arrangements of shells on wooden table tops, including a sea urchin, corals and coloured seaweeds, the reverses with equally large panels depicting vases on stone ledges overflowing with vibrant flowers, including pink roses, poppies and chrysanthemums, reserved on deep blue grounds within striking neoclassical gilt borders, the covers similarly painted with panels of shells and flowers, 31cm wide across the handles, impressed crowned FBB marks, script marks in red referring to royal patronage and London House Coventry Street address (4)Footnotes:The decoration on this lot relates to Baxter's painting and gilding on a range of cabinet pieces painted with flowers and shells. These are always on a deep blue grounds with the same gilded anthemion borders. See the centrepiece and the plate from the Twinight Collection, sold by Bonhams on 29 September 2021, lots 62 and 73. The present lot has the same border but the gilding is burnished and bright; presumably these were intended to be used as part of an opulent dessert service and raised gilding would have been a step too far towards the impractical. Baxter trained at the Royal Academy, learning the stipple-painting technique so often seen on his work. On larger pieces of porcelain like these, he was able to demonstrate shading but also the use of tiny raised enamel dots such as those seen on the sea urchin or the overturned cowrie shell. These lift the panels and give them depth. The shells rest on wooden table tops, Baxter further flexing his artistic muscles and testing his skills in trompe l'oeil.A single ice pail with similar decoration in the Museum of Royal Worcester is illustrated on the cover of Henry Sandon's book, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978) and also on page 104, pl.96.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A good Bow cream jug, circa 1753-55Of bellied shape with a plain loop handle, finely painted in an attractive and vibrant palette with a Chinese garden, a man presenting a vase of flowers to a small boy, a willow tree sprouting from blue and yellow rocks to the reverse and a man in a sampan below the spout, flying insects above, 8cm high, painter's mark E in red enamelFootnotes:ProvenanceElizabeth Adams CollectionIllustrated by Elizabeth Adams and David Redstone, Bow Porcelain (1981), col. pl.E.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Worcester bottle vase, circa 1754-55Of hexagonal bottle or 'onion' shape, printed in outline and carefully hand coloured with two groups of figures from the 'Chinese Musicians' pattern, a Chinese mother and child standing before a vase, a seated figure holding a fan to the reverse, surrounded by flying insects, a border of red scrollwork at the rim, 11.7cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Brian Haughton AntiquesThis is one of a small number of enamelled patterns made at Worcester early in the 1750s, that relied on a transfer-printed outline. A more elaborate hand painted version of the 'Chinese Musicians' pattern became popular at Worcester but not until the 1760s. The earlier printed version is also found on mustard pots, see that from The Rous Lench Collection sold by Christie's on 30 May 1990, lot 467.Saleroom notices:Please note that there is a workman's mark in red enamel to the underside of the bottle vase not mentioned in the catalogue. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A fine Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester medallion, circa 1830-35Of upright oval form and thinly potted, printed and hand-coloured with a portrait of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar, King Of Persia, raised enamel and gilding highlighting the detail on his ornate robes and crown, a border of 'pearls' left white against a gilt border, pierced for suspension, mounted in ormolu, later framed, medallion 6.5cm x 5.4cmFootnotes:ProvenanceJonathan Purt Esq CollectionThe source for the portrait of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar was an engraving published in 1821, after the sketch made from life by Sir Robert Ker Porter. Worcester produced this image on a range of fine cabinet cups, zarfs and medallions as memorial items for the Persian market. A cabinet cup and stand from the Charles Dawson Collection was sold by Bonhams on 14 December 2023, lot 443. Henry Sandon illustrates two medallions, one of 'Futteh Ali Shah' and one of the Prince Royal Abbas Mirza, see Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978), pl.182. Unlike these, the present lot has been carefully hand-coloured on top of the printed outline, including delicate and minute enamel dots to simulate the pearls and gems adorning the Shah's clothes. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An exceptionally rare coloured Limehouse salt, circa 1746-48Of circular form moulded with three floral sprays in high-relief, the petals and foliage picked out in shades of blue, green, yellow and orange, raised on three lion mask and paw feet with their features picked out in shades of brown and orange, all on a claret ground, 10.3cm wideFootnotes:ProvenanceWatney CollectionIllustrated in the ECC's Limehouse Ware Revealed (1993), p.55, col. pl.VX. Of the 21 or so pieces of coloured Limehouse extant, only three coloured salts are recorded, which appear in two very different forms. The present lot is the only example recorded in this particular form. The other comprises a pair of salts of quatrelobed form, raised on four bright green lion mask and paw feet, painted in bold famille rose style with flowers and a long-tailed bird, see Bernard Watney, 'Limehouse Coloured Ware', ECC Trans, Vol.15, Pt.1 (1993), p.69, figs.20 and 21. One of these is illustrated beside the present lot in the ECC's Limehouse Ware Revealed (1993), p.55, col. pl.XIV and was sold as part of the Watney Collection by Phillips on 22 September 1999, lot 128. Whilst no evidence of enamelling was found on the Limehouse factory site, closely related enamel decoration is found on Chinese and Japanese porcelain, enamelled in Europe. Whilst it is possible that the present lot was decorated in Holland, it is more likely that it is the work of a Dutch enameller working in England. See the footnote to lot 269 in this sale. A unique and very misshapen Limehouse salt decorated in underglaze blue, has lion head and paw feet like the present lot. It was sold by Bonhams as part of the Susi and Ian Sutherland Collection, 3 October 2007, lot 117, where it was purchased by Rosalie Sharp and illustrated in China to Light Up a House Vol.1 (2015), p.178, no.605. Also illustrated by Ray Jones, The Origins of Worcester Porcelain (2018), p.221, it is the only blue and white Limehouse salt recorded. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A fine and rare Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester armorial plate, decorated at Chamberlains, circa 1840From the 'Gale Braddyll' service, the wide claret border reserving raised enamel and gilt-edged panels painted with flowers and butterflies, below a gilt gadrooned rim, the centre printed-in-outline and finely hand-coloured and gilt with a coat of arms surmounted by three crests, the motto 'COGNOIES TOY MESME' in a pink banner, 25.4cm diam, impressed crowned FBB mark, red script mark for Chamberlain & Co with New Bond St and Coventry St addressesFootnotes:ProvenanceCharles Dawson CollectionExhibited in the ECC Armorials Exhibition, 2008. The production of this plate straddles the merger of the Flight, Barr and Barr and Chamberlain factories, explaining the unusual combination of marks. A plate from the service is illustrated and discussed by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), pp.91-3, fig.9.2 and a detail of the present lot is illustrated as fig.9.3. Most extant pieces from this ornate service are in the Gardner Museum, Boston, having been bought by Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1892 (inv. no.C1s49.16). It was likely made for Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Richmond Gale Braddyll (1776-1862) of Conishead Priory, Lancashire. An amateur artist from a wealthy family, Gale Braddyll frittered away the remainder of his fortune and was declared bankrupt in 1848.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A St James's (Charles Gouyn) scent bottle and stopper, circa 1751-59Modelled as a woman carrying a yellow basket overflowing with flowers, the stopper formed of two billing birds, another bird held in her arms, tiny pink rose sprays adorning her dress, a faithful dalmatian dog at her feet above the motto 'FIDELLE ME GUIDE' in red enamel, a single pink rose spray painted to the underside of the concave base, 7cm high (2)Footnotes:Kate Foster illustrates a similar example in her paper, 'Chelsea Scent Bottles - 'Girl in a Swing' and Another Group', ECC Trans, Vol.6, Pt.3 (1967), pl.213(c). Another example from the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection, lacking its stopper is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.414:298-1885).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An early Worcester moulded cream jug, circa 1753-55Of finely lobed pear shape, with a double C-scroll handle with curled thumbrest, painted with a 'Long Eliza' figure walking past a low fence and willow tree and pointing to the large plant beneath the lip, the reverse with a colourful bird on flowering branches growing from fanciful rocks, 8.3cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Brian Haughton Antiques, 10 December 2015The Chinese figures carefully painted in colours on moulded cream jugs and a few other early Worcester shapes, vary considerably between different examples. Most seem to be pointing, while others have their arms folded. Some are waiting or standing still, while on the present lot the figure seems to be walking. Related figures and other motifs occur in primitive blue and white patterns from Lund's Bristol and from the earliest Worcester blue painted productions. By contrast, however, Worcester's enamel decoration is much more sophisticated from the outset. Clearly, Worcester's first overglaze decorators did not travel from Bristol and we must look to either Staffordshire saltglaze, Birmingham enamel or enamelled opaque white glass for the origins of the pattern on this delightful cream jug.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A fine and rare pair of South Staffordshire enamelled opaque white glass tea bottles and enamel covers, circa 1755-60By the 'swirled flowers' painter, of shouldered rectangular form with canted corners, painted to the front with a landscape vignette depicting a goldfinch perched on a leafy branch below a purple scrollwork cartouche, respectively inscribed 'BOHEA' and 'GREEN' in black enamel, the reverses with a colourful bouquet of flowers including roses, the sides of both with sprays of flowers in pink and blue respectively, all surrounded by scattered sprigs, the enamel covers both painted with a gallant playing a flute before a seated lady, with engine-turned gilt-metal mounts, 14.2cm high (4)Footnotes:ProvenanceGeorge Lockett CollectionSir Hugh Dawson CollectionWith Delomosne and Son, February 1983Christie's, 14 May 2003, lot 278Bayreuth CollectionLiteratureR J Charleston, English Glass (1984), pl.45bAndy McConnell, The Decanter: Ancient to Modern (2018), p.102, no.1ExhibitedDelomosne and Son, Gilding the Lily, 1978, no.4These tea bottles or canisters belong to a group of opaque white glass enamelled with distinctive floral decoration characterised by a series of turbulent curves and flicks, termed 'swirled flowers' by W A Thorpe. This includes a series of tea bottles of this type, painted with a goldfinch or bullfinch beneath the name of the tea in a scrolled cartouche. This style of painting on opaque white glass was once attributed to Bristol, primarily on the basis of family traditions relating to the painter Michael Edkins. However, a number of features point instead to a South Staffordshire origin, including the enamel fittings associated with many of these pieces, such as the caps on the present lot. This is discussed in detail by R J Charleston in Delomosne and Sons exhibition catalogue, Gilding the Lily (1978), p.7. It is possible that this distinctive group of enamelled glass may have been made in the Birmingham workshop of the 'toymaker' John Wood, who is known to have collaborated with the Aston glassmaker Holte Bridgeman.Another pair of opaque white glass tea bottles for 'GREEN' and 'BOHEA' was sold by Christie's on 24 November 1987, lot 76. A comparable tea bottle for 'GREEN', enamelled instead with a bullfinch, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum together with a similar example for 'BOHEA' (inv. nos.5288&A-1901 and 414:1380-1885). A single tea bottle for 'BOHEA' painted with a bullfinch was also in the James Hall Collection, sold by Bonhams on 17 December 2008, lot 108.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Paddy Brennan 18k gold Waltham full hunter pocket watch, with enamel dial, subsidiary seconds and Roman numerals, the interior of the case inscribed Presented To P. J. Brennan By The SHAMROCK LACROSSE CLUB, Champions 1907, the outer case inscribed with initials At the turn of the century, Paddy Brennan was already established as one of the top amateur lacrosse players with the Shamrock Lacrosse Club of Montreal, Quebec. By 1904 he was being offered opportunities to turn professional, but refused them all. He was therefore able to participate in the trials for what would become Canada's first truly national amateur lacrosse delegation and was selected not only to travel with them to the 1908 Summer Olympics, but to act as a captain. His amateur status also meant, however, that he had to work as a businessman outside of lacrosse, and he his presence on the team was at times sporadic. Work pressures eventually led him to announce his retirement in May of 1909. In 1912, however, he returned to the Shamrocks when the National Lacrosse Union voted to reinstate the role of the field captain, and the Shamrocks' president refused to take on the role himself. He even played in one more game with the team in July 1915 and scored a goal. Shortly thereafter he left the sport for over a decade, but by the late 1920s he had renewed his interest and began to work to raise its popularity. Paddy Brennan has been attributed as the inventor of indoor box lacrosse, a modern version of the game introduced in Canada during the 1920s and 30s. Brennan was said to get annoyed by the constant slowing of play from balls going out of bounds in the field game, and began experimenting with indoor games at the Mount Royal Arena, Montreal, during the early 1920s. He also served as the coach of Montreal's St. Willbrord lacrosse team before taking up that role with the professional Montreal Maroons in the early 1930s. In addition, he held the position of the Maroons' manager and accepted the role of honorary coach with the Verdun Athletic Club's amateur lacrosse squad. He remained active in promoting the sport at all levels until the 1950s, when he began to experience heart troubles, and he died in May of 1961. Patrick "Paddy" Brennan was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1966. We had the pleasure of selling Paddy's 1908 Olympic gold medal in these rooms at our Sporting Memorabilia Auction 10-11th November 2014, Lot 576 Provenance: By family descent
