Condition of the jewel and case - both fine. * The child genius and gifted mathematician, William Fleetwood Sheppard (1863-1936), who is best known for the eponymous statistical theory, Sheppard's Correction, was removed from Brisbane Grammar School after his first term. This was on the recommendation of the headmaster, who thought the school could not do justice to such a brilliant pupil, and he was, therefore, sent to Charterhouse in England. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1881 as a Foundation Scholar and graduated in 1884 as Senior Wrangler aged 20. In 1887 he was elected Fellow of Trinity College and was passed as Master of Arts in 1888 (four weeks before the date on the jewel). In the following year he passed as Master of Laws and was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1890, where, for a time, he shared rooms with 'the wicked earl', Frank Russell. This change in career was perhaps influenced by his father, a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, who had been footing the cost of his son's English education since 1873. In 1896 came another career change, when he joined the Education Department as a Junior Examiner. Having been promoted Assistant Secretary in 1914, he retired from the Board of Education in 1921, thus allowing him to devote more time to mathematics which he had, in fact, never abandoned. Indeed, the first of his many mathematical papers was published in 1888, when he was embarking on his legal career.
