They had only progressed to one final in 1978 which ended in defeat to Forest. So the win over West Ham in 1981 was something of a seminal victory and one that opened the floodgates. Liverpool recorded a hat-trick of League Cup wins by retaining the trophy in 1982 and 1983, and the club has now won the competition eight times in all, a tally more than any other team.
