A metal and enamel Alhambra plaque depicting a Mihrab for illustrating the Qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. Possibly attributable to Enrique Linares; framed and glazed, overall dimensions about 51 x 39 cm, 19th or 20th CenturyFor a comparison of this important feature, see the Mihrab of the Maydan Mosque in Kashan, dated to AH 623/1226; this is one of the earliest examples extant and is illustrated on page 261 of 'The World of Islam', edited by Bernard Lewis (1992 Edition). The Alhambra, which gives its name to these plaques, stands as one of Classical Islam's greatest monuments, re-built by Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar from Circa AH 665; its buildings resonate with the verses of Granada's great poet, Ibn Zamrak..
