P½Footnotes:Between 1720-1840, a remarkable circle of nonconformist and primarily Baptist women writers emerged in and around Salisbury, eventually stretching as far as Bristol, Southampton, London and Leicester. These nonconformist women all shared an interest in politics, advocating for greater British tolerance toward the American colonies, opposing the transatlantic slave trade and war with France. Marianna Head (circa 1742-1832) was the daughter of Anna Gay (1710-84) and Thomas Attwater (1691-1767) of Bodenham. Her grandmother, Jane Cator Gay (1680-1756) was the sister of the non-conformist diarist, Anne Cator Steele (1689-1760). Prior to her marriage, Marianna was very active within the Steele circle, writing all of her poetry between 1768-1770. She married George Head (d. 1785), a clothier from Bradford-on-Avon, in 1773 and with the exception of one hymn, her work did not appear in print during her lifetime. Today, her work is recognised for containing both sacred and secular themes, expressed with authority and a sharp wit. See Whelan, T., 'Nonconformist Women Writers, 1720-1840', London, 2011, vols 4 (pp. 151-90) and 8 (pp. 139, 188-93, 198-99) for Marianna Head's extant poetry and surviving correspondence. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
