A fine Russian 14k. gold, black enamel and diamond mourning locket, 19th century, of ovoid form with gently convex side, the black enamelled and gold hinged lid decorated with large gold bee, the thorax set pendeloque rose cut diamond, the abdomen and head each set three circular rose cut diamonds, the wings each set ten diamonds, with finely engraved leg detail, the side with convex off set grips, impressed assay mark for 56 zolotniks (.583 fineness/14 carat), St. Petersburg, and unidentified maker's mark in Cyrillic. The locket carries a hidden message in its form and components - reading "Be sure of my eternal love, beyond the grave". Height 4cm x width 3cm x depth 1.8cm.
