A late 19th century silver coloured metal open face pocket watch, for the Chinese market Condition report Report by GHA couple of very small dents to the rear of the case. Watch runs for a few seconds when activated by a flick of the wrist. Movement appears to be in very good condition and is protected by a glass cover. Enamel face appears to be without any damage or hairline cracks. Roman numerals and indices generally without any wear. Hands also in good condition. Overall very good
A memoriam brooch, the central hair locket surrounded by black enamel, and a 9ct gold memoriam ring, with hair window, approx. ring size P (2) Condition report Report by GHBrooch with some wear and generally grubby, but with no obvious major damages to the front. Enamel a little rubbed but with no obvious cracks or loss. Various dents and scratches on the back. The ring is a little misshapen and with some wear but generally intact with no obvious damage or repair.
A French mantel clock, the enamel dial with Arabic numerals and decorated flowers, fitted a Japy Freres movement striking on a gong, and with a compensated mercury pendulum, in a gilt metal and marble four pillar case with champlevé enamel decoration, 33.5 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by NGPendulum and keySome chips to corners of case, the top right hand front corner of the marble case has been broken off and re-glued. The enamel is generally in good condition with general ingrained dirt but no obvious major damage or restoration. Movement generally appears complete and in good condition with key and pendulum present. Dial has some dirt and no obvious damage. The glass panel at the front has a couple of small nibbles to the top left of the glass. One further nibble to the top right of the rear panel. Working condition of the clock unknown. Movement has a gong strike, possibly on the hour or quarterly.
A Chinese porcelain mug, with painted and gilt decoration, 14.5 cm high, a pair of cloisonné vases, a cinnabar lacquer vase, and other ceramics (7) Condition report Report by NGChinese mug: Crack from rim running into body near handle, approx. 3.5 cm long. Large firing crack in dip of handle. Pock marks and pitting. Some rubbing to gilt and painted decoration.Cloisonne vases, approx. 16 cm high. One dented and with losses, other with losses and dent to foot-ring, other pitting and bubbling in enamel. Cinnabar Tobacco Vase, approx. 16 cm high. Damage to interior around neck of rim. Again, slight damage to enamel on base. Some losses to lacquer around foot. Other small nibbles/chips to decoration.Blue and white saucer, approx. 16 cm wide. Hairline crack from rim towards foot, approx. 3 cm long. Pitting and pock marks from production. Some surface scratches to bottom of plate.Other plate, approx. 14.5 cm diameter. Again crack to rim and rubbing to decoration.Cup and cover, approx. 11.5 cm high. Pitting and pock marks, firing crack to handle and production faults but there does not appear to be any later damage.
An Albert Medal in Gold for Saving Life at Sea, awarded to Samuel Lake, the reverse engraved 'Wreck of the Diamond 20th June 1866 Presented in the name of Her Majesty to Samuel Lake', in a (Phillips) case of issue, and a photograph of Samuel Lake.Samuel Lake was one of the very first recipients of the Albert Medal, 1st Class having first been instituted by a Royal Warrant on 7th March 1866. Samuel Lake, from Dartmouth in Devon received the Albert Medal for his bravery in helping the crew and 400 Muslim pilgrims, who were returning from Mecca aboard the vessel Diamond when she sank off Bombay. Lake returned a hero to Dartmouth, and in 1880 he also received the RNLI's Vellum Award, one of the organisations highest accolades, again given for saving life, this time off Milford Haven. Lake was also posthumously awarded the Swedish Gold Bravery Medal in 1887 for saving the crew of the Swedish ship Ida, when it was wrecked off Corsica. Samuel Lake was an engineer and inventor who pioneered steam trawlers and he built Coombe Terrace Cottages in Dartmouth for the crews of the trawlers which were the first houses in the country to be made from poured concrete.Provenance: Descent through the family See front cover colour and other illustrations Condition report chip to enamel, some wear
