DOCUMENTARY MID-19TH CENTURY WELSH MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK, by John Jones, Aberystwyth, c.1845, swan neck pediment, breakarch hood with twisted columns, above trunk with shaped door and twisted columns, on circular panelled base raised on turned feet, well painted 13in. Roman dial with moonphase in the arch, St Peter and St Paul in the globes, spandrels with figures allegorical of the continents, centre painted with the Angel appearing to Jacob at Peniel (Genesis XXXII, 24-30), subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture, the 8-day two-train weight-driven anchor escapement rack striking a bell, 220cm high. A Mintons 'Cloisonné' Aesthetic Movement vase in the manner of Dr Christopher Dresser, date stamp for 1883, the twin handled vase decorated with polychrome enamelled butterflies to the flared neck and floral, foliate and fruiting sprigs to the body, set against a turquoise ground with gilt highlights, printed maker's mark and impressed indistinctly 'Mintons U' and '3091' to base, 29cm high SEE CONDITION REPORT FOR FULL INFORMATION CONDITION REPORT: The piece shows no visible chips, cracks or losses, and no visible signs of restoration. There is rubbing to the gilt highlights throughout (including some loss to the design at the base of the neck) most noticeably to one handle where the gilt has worn through revealing the porcelain (see images) and some discolouration to the cobalt blue areas. Two very, very feint hairlines around the base of each of the upper handles, where the handle meets the body, these do not appear to be surface reaching and on one side extends up around the side of the handle (see additional images for further clarification of this). The body shows fine surface scratching in places, but no visible crazing. The enamel colours are generally strong and bright, but there is some evidence of enamel wear to the black areas of the butterflies. The piece is grubby and would also benefit from professional cleaning. PLEASE NOTE: due to the nature of the shape of the piece it is impossible for us to see the interior of the lower section of the vase.
