A PAIR OF CHINESE CANTON ENAMEL FAMILLE ROSE DISHES, 19TH CENTURY The centre painted with a European with his attendant sitting beneath a tree, the borders with panels of birds and flowers on a diaper ground, 21.5cm.(2) Cf. Chinese painted enamels, The China Institute in America, p.16 no.12 for a similar pair dated to the Yongzheng period.
A PAIR OF CHINESE BEIJING ENAMEL U-SHAPED CUPS, REPUBLIC PERIOD OR LATER Each painted in famille rose enamels in the Yongzheng style with lotus, prunus, bamboo and peach on a yellow ground decorated with flowers, foliage and shou characters, each with a four character Yongzheng mark, one with a paper label inscribed ‘from Duveen’, 8.4cm across. (2) Provenance: an American private collection.
A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL BEIJING ENAMEL SMALL ‘QUAIL AND MILLET’ VASE , FOUR CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1736-95 The slender pear-shaped body painted with two quails beneath millet and blue rocks on an Imperial yellow ground beneath a border of small blue ruyi heads and a central gilded collar. The cylindrical neck with a formal flower and leaf scroll on a pink ground, together with, and attached to, a hexagonal enamel base painted with further flower heads and leaf scrolls on a yellow ground raised on six lingzhi-shaped feet, the remains of a paper label, the vase 12cm, 20cm (overall). Cf. The British Museum, no. 1936, 0413.46 for a closely related vase also with a four character Qianlong reign mark bequeathed by Reginald Radcliffe Cory in 1936. A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL GREEN ENAMELLED ‘DRAGON’ DISH, SIX CHARACTER ZHENGDE MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD 1506-1521 The shallow body decorated to the interior with a central medallion containing a five-clawed scaly dragon, writhing amongst clouds and flame wisps, the reverse with two further dragons to the rim, the green enamel on the fifth claw of each dragon effaced, a paper label for Bluett & Sons London, 19.8cm. Provenance: purchased as part of a pair by Bluett & Sons from auctioneers Foster & Cranfield, 4th May 1932, lot 318, for £15:10. The collection of Mrs Basil Drewe, purchased from Bluett & Sons, 8th December 1933, for £35, possibly as a Christmas present, and thence by descent. Cf. A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL YELLOW GROUND ‘CRANES’ BOWL, SIX CHARACTER YONGZHENG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1723-35 Finely potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short straight foot, incised and enamelled around the exterior with eight cranes in flight amidst green enamelled cloud scrolls above rockwork and breaking waves which encircle the base, the interior with a lustrous yellow glaze, 15cm.
