A RARE 18TH-CENTURY WATCH-FORM PEDOMETER BY SPENCER & PERKINS. with 1 3/4in. enamel main dial for step counting signed SPENCER & PERKINS LONDON, subdivided with two further dials for miles and dozens of miles, each with blued-steel hands, the mechanism set within a gilt brass case and operated by a tilting rod numbered '1351' terminating in a waistband hook. 8 1/2in. (22cm.) long. Spencer & Perkins were makers of watches between 1765 and 1806 from 44 Snow Hill, London. They are also known to have sold waywisers so the lot offered is a logical progression for them. When hooked over the waistband of a pair of breeches, the mechanism is progressed by the upward movement of the thigh which rocks the whole instrument forwards and backwards.
