Rachel Feinstein, American b.1971 - The Shack, 2001; wood, cedar shingles, wire, plaster, nylon fabric, mirror, gold leaf & enamel paint in 4 parts, 318 x 231 x 188 cm *this item can only be viewed by appointment* Provenance: with Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York; private collection Exhibited: Sadie Coles HQ, London, 'Room', 13th January - 18th February 2017; The Jewish Museum, New York, 'Rachel Feinstein: Maiden, Mother, Crone', 1st November 2019 - 17th January 2021 Note: this is a brilliant example of the artist's work in its fantastical forms and baroque monumentality, often inspired by fairy tales and playing with notions of kitsch. This early work was created in the same year as her first solo exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York in 2001, marking it as a pivotal piece in her development as an artist. Her teacher, Kiki Smith, has been a major influence on her work. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including at Chatsworth House in 2019, Gagosian, London in 2022 and the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah in 2023. She has collaborated with varied figures, from her husband John Currin at the Hydra Workshop in Greece, to the designer Marc Jacobs in London for Frieze Art Fair. An exhibition project of her work will be held across Florence at the Stefano Bardini Museum, Palazzo Medici Riccardi and Marino Marini Museum from June to September of this year, curated by Sergio Risaliti, director of the Museo Novecento.
