Los 43

A selection of WW2 medals, with original transit box, awarded to 1705638 J.Weston. To include: the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal. The enclosed medal slip in the box also states that the recipient is also entitled to 1st Army Clasp for the Africa Star, but this is not included. The slip also has the hand written service number of 1705638, according to published records would mean that J.Weston served in the Royal Artillery. An included group photograph of officers and men of the Royal Artillery wold seem to back this up, and an inscription on the back reads ‘Weston 4/= to pay’. Plus, a sterling silver open faced pocket watch, with the monogram of ‘JW’ engraved to the back, and a further inscription to the inside, which reads: Presented to John Weston by Henry Wiggin & Co Ltd, in commemoration of the company’s centenary year 1935. And on completion of 28 years service’. The case is hallmarked for Birmingham 1935, with its attached watch chain being hallmarked for the earlier date of 1918. And, 3 sterling silver medallions, one for school attendance and dated 1900 (named to John Weston), one for a 24 hours T.T over 377 miles (named to E.G.Hargrave) dated 1938, and another silver and enamel example for the Birmingham Juvenile Organisation Committee, awarded in 1932 for boxing, and named to C.Satchwell. Condition: a little age related wear to some pieces. The medals would seem to be unworn, with the ribbons still wrapped in their packets of issue. The medals are tarnish with age, but are in good order. The pocket watch is mostly structurally sound, and appears to run when wound (but this is not a guarantee of its time keeping ability). There is a crack to the enamel dial between the numbers one and two. The 3 silver medallions show some wear from polishing, but otherwise remain in good condition.

Los 62A

A WW2 or earlier gilt brass RAF Pathfinder badge, with hinged pin and C clasp to the reverse side. Marked for Ludlow London in raised letters on the reverse. Plus, reproduction die stamped bronze pair of Royal Flying Corps wings, with 2 blades to the reverse, a Chinese Republic gilt bronze and enamel pilots badge (with 2 clutch pins to the reverse, and number stamped 711), an unknown aviation badge with blue enamel central panel (possibly Swedish?), with 2 clutch pins to the reverse (one reattached), a Russian Federation 1st Class Military pilot’s badge (2 clutch pins to the reverse), and a United States Navy Observer / Flight Meteorologist’s badge. 6 items. Condition: generally good. The Pathfinder badge has a little wear to the gilt finish on the breast of the eagle, revealing the brass base metal below. All of the badges are complete with their fittings to the reverse.

A WW1 silver British War Medal, Knights Templar badges, silver medallions and other items. To include: a BWM named to M.26510 H.Jones E.A.5. Royal Navy, an Edwardian hallmarked silver and enamel Knights Templar breast star (hallmarked for London 1902 by George Kenning), a silver and enamel Knights Templar cross (also hallmarked for London 1902), a hallmarked silver gilt and enamel Masonic medallion (hallmarked for Birmingham 1921 by Arthur Fenwick), 3 hallmarked silver sporting medallions (hallmarked for 1889, and two for 1894), a gold plated gentleman’s pocket watch, 1894 silver crown, a gilt metal Masonic medallion, a gilt metal and enamel Conservative & Unionist medallion, and a silver and enamel marksmanship medallion or fob, seemingly for a Welsh rifle club (West Monmouthshire Rifle Association?) - Birmingham made silver, but date letter is rubbed away. 12 items. Condition: generally good to most pieces. The British War Medal is missing its ribbon. Both Knights Templar pieces in good condition, with good enamels. The silver and enamel Masonic medallion is also in good order, with good enamels. The pocket watch is cosmetically good, with a good even gold plating, but the mechanism must be at fault, as it would appear not to work when wound.

An interesting and scarce Falklands War Vulcan Bomber souvenir mounted engine part, with letter of provenance. Salvaged from the decommissioned Vulcan XM 607, which took part in a long range bombing run at Port Stanley runway on May 1st 1982. Manufactured in aluminium, mounted on an oak base, with an applied gilt metal and enamel RAF Waddington badge to one side. Complete with original Royal Air Force Waddington letter, dated February 14th 1983, and signed by Flt Lt I P Woodhouse OC ASF, certifying that the piece is a component taken from the Rolls Royce Bristol Olympus engine MK 30101, serial number 650414, which powered the Vulcan XM 607 aircraft that put Port Stanley runway out of action during the Falklands campaign. Notes: XM607 was completed on December 30th 1963, and was delivered to 35 Squadron the following year. The aircraft took part in Operation Black Buck (as part of 44 Squadron), flying in the first, second, and 7th raids on the occupying Argentinian forces at Port Stanley. XM607 had due to be the reserve or back up aircraft for the first raid, but a technical fault with the first choice XM598 (failure in cabin pressure), meant that XM607 carried out the first raid, commanded by Flt Lt Martin Withers. The 9 hour non stop flight involved two mid air refuels from Victor Tanker planes. The aircraft was retired in December 1982, and by January 1983 it was displayed as a gate guardian at RAF Waddington. It’s known that the aircraft has been used sporadically as a parts donor for more airworthy Vulcan over the years, and it’s likely that this part was an early piece of salvage. Approximately 13.5cm height, base size 10.5cm x 7cm. Condition: generally good. A little surface wear and patination to the aluminium in places for use. The base is in good condition, some small areas of enamel loss to the applied badge.

Los 98

A scarce WW2 era Civil Nursing Reserve felt hat, fitted with a red grosgrain ribbon hatband, side bow, and a white metal and enamel Civil Nursing Reserve badge (the badge made by Gaunt). Plus, a WW2 era British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses cap, fitted with a black and white grosgrain hatband, and a gilt metal and enamel cap badge. With BRCS inked label to the inside. Condition: generally good. The CNR hat has a little soiling to the crown area, with a small snag to the red hatband, and a tiny moth hole to the brim at the back. The VAD cap remains in good clean condition.

A pre-WW2 era Order of St John Knight of Grace cased insignia set, Latvian Order of the Three Stars, and various Coronation / Jubilee Medals and miniatures, awarded to Aneurin Gomer Emlyn Jones Fudge. To include: a St John Knight of Grace set with a silver and white enamel neck badge, and a silver and white enamel breast badge. The breast badge would appear to have a rose gold pin to the reverse. Plus, a 1911 Coronation Police Medal with the St John Ambulance Brigade reverse (engraved naming to Corps Superintendent A.G.E.J. Fudge), a 1935 Silver Jubilee Medal, 1937 Coronation Medal, Service Medal of the Order of St John with two 5 year bars attached to the ribbon (engraved naming to 1796 Borough Commander A.G.E.J.Fudge - Priory for Wales 1920), a Latvian Chevalier of Order of the Three Stars silver gilt and enamel neck badge, with thin black neck ribbon. The 1911 Medal, 1935, 1937 and St John Ambulance service medal are swing mounted for wear. Also included is a good quality set of corresponding miniatures, showing his full entitlement, and mounted on a pin back bar for wear, plus a 1939 dated original document signed by King George Vi, authorising the wear of the Latvian order. The medals are also accompanied by a black beaver skin bi-corn hat with painted tin hat box, and a black and white belt with tassels. The brass plaque on the tin reads ‘AGEJF’ Notes: Aneurin Fudge was awarded the Order of the Three Star on account of him being the Honorary Vice Consul of Latvia in Newport, Monmouthshire. Also included are numerous Buckingham Palace invitation cards, inviting Aneurin and his wife to garden parties and investitures. Condition: generally good. Normal age related toning to the silver medals, but very little evidence of polishing. The enamel on the St John set is in good order, as is the Latvian order and its miniature equivalent. Some normal wear and signs of age to the paper documents, but nothing that is detrimental overall. The George VI signed document has very slight fading to the blue ink signature, but it is nevertheless still very clear.

A mid 20th century example of a companions gilt neck badge for the Order of St Michael and St George, plus an interesting archive of material relating to Sir Arthur Edwin Trotman (1907-1961), former Minister for Natural Resources in Tanganyika. To include: CMG in sliver gilt and enamel, complete with neck ribbon and fitted case, with the jewellers details for ‘Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Crown Jewellers Incorporating Garrard & Co’. Plus, numerous period photographs of Sir Arthur, in his officials tropical uniform, and wearing his CMG. He is also wearing a Queens Coronation Medal to his left breast (not included in lot), and would appear to be a photograph of him being awarded this (pinned to his chest) by the High Commissioner. There are also group photographs featuring Sir Arthur, as he carried out his duties as a colonial administrator.  Accompanying the archive is a Royal decree, hand signed by Queen Elizabeth II, and the Home Secretary at the time, Rab Butler, relating to the award of his Knighthood in the early 1960’s. Tragically, Arthur didn’t live to see the physical award of his Knighthood, as he died a mere few weeks before the presentation of his award. The document goes on to confirm that Arthur’s widow, Vera Trotman, shall be afforded the title of ‘Lady’, on account of her late husband’s status. Within the lot are also 2 presentation photograph albums, given to Sir Arthur by the Ministry of Natural Resources in circa 1960. Notes: the award of Arthur’s CMG appeared in the London Gazette on January 1st 1954, for his role in the Colonial Agricultural Service. His knighthood is gazetted on December 31st 1960, and he died on January 19th 1961, age 54. He left a widow, Vera, and 2 sons, Peter and John. Condition: generally good to most pieces. The CMG has suffered some tiny enamel damage to one of the arms on both sides, which is difficult to see with the naked eye, but noticeable under magnification. The document signed by Queen Elizabeth II is almost pristine, with just a light small crease to the bottom right hand corner. The photographs and albums are also in generally good condition.

Philip LaVerne (Amercan, 1907-1987) and Kelvin LaVerne (American, b. 1937). Acid-etched patinated bronze, enamel, and pewter model "#142" coffee or cocktail table from the LaVerne's iconic "Chan" series, ca. 1960. The central tabletop image depicts a lively Chan dynasty era village scene. Peasants mill around the landscape carrying sacred gifts, possibly for an Emperor’s child, evoking themes of reverence and celebration. The harmonious blend of delicately wrought foliage and figures, enhanced by a rich palette of multicolored patinas, embody the essence of Chinoiserie design. Incised signatures along the lower right of the tabletop; "Philip LaVerne Galleries Ltd." label along the underside of the tabletop.Lot Essay:Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, a father-and-son duo from New York, emerged as pivotal figures in mid-20th century American design, renowned for their transformative approach to furniture and decorative arts. Philip LaVerne, initially a skilled craftsman, began his career in the early 1940s, creating bespoke pieces that combined traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. His collaboration with his son Kelvin, who brought fresh perspectives and innovative techniques, marked a significant evolution in their design philosophy. Together, they pioneered the use of complex metal alloys and intricate etching processes, crafting furniture that was both functional and highly artistic. Their work, characterized by its rich textures and dynamic patterns, drew inspiration from a range of influences including classical art, Asian aesthetics, and abstract modernism. The "Chan" Series, Model #142 coffee table featured in this lot, a prime example of the LaVerne's legendary craftsmanship, reflects their dedication to integrating art with utility. The table's design embodies their signature style, featuring hand-etched bronze with elaborate patterns that evoke both elegance and intrigue. This piece not only highlights their technical skill but also their ability to imbue everyday objects with a sense of artistry and cultural depth. The work of the LaVerne's remains a testament to their innovative spirit and enduring influence in the world of decorative arts, bridging the gap between high art and functional design.Height: 17 in x diameter: 47 1/4 in.Condition: There are no major splits, cracks, or losses to the wood or the inlay. Some light scratches along the surface of the table. Some patination throughout, possibly original to the artistic process.
