An Unusual Japanese Lamp with Plique-a-jour Shade An Unusual Japanese Lamp with Plique-a-jour Shade, the lamp of inverted baluster form resting on a broad splayed foot and rising to a straight neck with central boss, the whole decorated in a mottled green enamel with a band of archaistic key-fret around the middle of the neck, the silver rims stamped "Jungin", and fitted for electricity; the Plique-a-jour shade of mallet form upon a cylindrical base and decorated with peonies, chrysanthemum and other flowers beside a fence beneath stylised clouds above, with silver rims, height overall 43cms, Early 20th Century. -1 A Chinese famille rose 'medallion' bowl, Daoguang or later -1 A Chinese famille rose 'medallion' bowl, Daoguang or later, the exterior enamelled with four roundels enclosing the love-story scenes of Niulang (the Cowherd) and Zhinu (the Girl Weaver) within gilt borders, all reserved on a densely-engraved pale blue ground brightly enamelled with cloud scrolls, the interior with an underglaze-blue scene of the reunion of the couple surrounded by flying magpies, Daoguang seal mark, with wooden box and cover, the bowl 15.1cm diam. -1 Provenance: An English private collection, acquired, by repute, form the father of the present owner who was stationed in Shanghai in the 1930s with the British Army. The present bowl celebrates the Qixi Festival, also known as Magpie Festival, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Chinese tradition tells the story of a young cowherd known as Niulang who falls in love with a beautiful girl called Zhinü, the seventh daughter of the Goddess, whose task was to weave colourful clouds. The Goddess was furious at their attachment and scratched a wide river in the sky with her hairpin to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the Milky Way.
