A French ormolu and white marble figural mantel clock in Louis XVI style, Grohé Freres Paris, late 19th century, with eight-day bell striking movement with outside countwheel stamped with Japy Frères roundel to backplate, the circular white enamel Roman numeral dial inscribed Grohé, A Paris to centre behind hinged glazed bezel, the case cast with a figure of Amor seated with a dove and scribing onto a scroll resting over the dial, above a white marble oval base mounted with a laurel cast band, 44.5cm high, 48cm wide Provenance: probably purchased Christie's London lot 210, 1 November 2001, £7,050 (inc. premium). Guillaume & Jean-Michel Grohé went into partnership in 1829 and formed the atelier "Grohé Frères" in 1847. They went on to supply the highest quality furniture, furnishings, clocks and bronzes to European royalty including Prince Albert at the Paris Exhibition of 1855.

An impressive Napoleon III French figural ormolu mantel clock- Lerolle Frères, circa 1875, the eight-day two train bell striking movement stamped LEROLLE F..., PARIS, 138, AH, to backplate, the case depicting Minerva depicted standing supporting a shield surmounted by her attendant owl, the shield incorporating the clock dial with enamel cartouche Roman numerals, the foliate decorated gadroon moulded base with reclining figure of Ceres or Fortuna and palmette apron panel flanked by scrolling feet, approximately 70.5cm high, 50cm wideA very similar clock numbered 92 was sold at Sotheby's New York, Lot 319, 22 October 2008 for £9,954 (inc. premium). The important firm of bronziers and sculptors Lerolle Freres was founded in 1836 when Louis Lerolle passed on the business to his two sons. They exhibited ornamental clocks, garnitures, chandeliers and candelabras, predominantly gilt-bronze or silvered, at most of the international exhibitions held during the second half of the 19th century including London 1851, New York 1853, and Paris 1855 (where the firm obtained a médaille de 1re classe). In 1862, Lerolle participated in the Exposition des Beaux Arts Appliqués à l'Industrie and the same year were manufacturing bronzes for the Maison S.A.I. le Prince Napoléon, and the l'Hôtel de la Commission Française.  Condition Report: Movement is complete and in working condition although a clean/service is advised. The dial has noticeable hairline cracks to the V numeral and lesser not so noticeable cracks to the VII and VIII numerals otherwise appears free from significant damage. The case has overall light rubbing to high spots to the front (commensurate with years of dusting!) the rear has very little wear/rubbing to gilding. The movement is original to the dial and case confirming that the clock is a 'revival' piece dating to the latter part of the 19th century. The dial is in good condition and the case is generally sound with significant faults limited to movement/cracking and small localised repairs to the shell veneers commensurate with age.Clock does have a pendulum and winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer

A late 19th century French ormolu figural "chariot" mantel clock after the model by Frédéric-Eugène Piat, the eight-day countwheel bell striking movement stamped indistinctly *R *501, with slender white enamel Roman numeral chapter ring forming the rim of a six-spoke chariot wheel of the case "Chérubins assis dans un char tiré par un tigre", modelled as a Bacchic scene with seated satyr in leopard drawn chariot, attended by three putti, over a naturalistic scroll cast base signed "E Piat", the whole resting on conforming scroll mounted ebonised base, the case with Arrow foundry mark to underside of satyr's foot and stamped indistinctly also to interior of rear case door, 60cms high, 78.5cms wide. Frédéric-Eugène Piat (1827-1903) was artistic director of the Maison Marchand producing designs primarily in bronze for clocks, fireplace furniture, sculpture and fountains. Perhaps his most famous creation- in association with Maison Millet Paris- was the "Grande Horloge"- a monumental clock in ormolu, bronze and Carrara marble standing 270cms high. The Saint-Loup museum of fine arts in Troyes, Champagne-Ardenne, holds the largest collection of his artwork and designs. Condition Report: Movement is compete and in working order although a precautionary service/clean is advised. The chapter ring has probably become detached and has been re-attached using superglue with some adhesive fingerprints being left on the the enamel surface otherwise ring appears undamaged. The hands are probably replacements. The case is in fine condition with minimal wear/discolouration.Clock is complete with a pendulum and winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer
