Two years later came his career highlight when he refereed the West Germany v USSR final tie in the UEFA 1972 European Championships.

Cup and League Championship medals in a one-club career where he made 248 appearances and scored 54 goals. Lot 784 is in this auction has been consigned from the same estate of a deceased collector. It is an unnamed Sunderland Football League Championship medal for season 1936-37. However, the family and the auctioneer cannot confirm it there is a player connection between the medals being offered as lots 782 and 784

THOMPSONJohn Ernest Thompson (1909-1985) was born at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, and played the majority of his career at Blackburn Rovers. He made just three League appearances for Manchester United having transferred for a fee of £4,500 in 1936. He finished his career back in his native north-east at Gateshead.

After the Great War he played for Tranmere Rovers but suffered from poor health as a result of a gas attack whilst serving in the trenches and he died when Joe junior was just 12 years old.
