A Chinese Cream Jug, c.1790, for the American market finely enamelled en grisaille with a view, probably of Whampoa, within blue enamel and gilt star borders, 10.7cm European and, later, US ships were obliged by the Chinese to anchor at Whampoa, of which the nine-tier pagoda is a landmark. They then transferred to small boats for the trip up the Pearl River to Canton to trade. See The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Carl L.
