A Chinese Cream Jug, c.1790, for the American market finely enamelled en grisaille with a view, probably of Whampoa, within blue enamel and gilt star borders, 10.7cm European and, later, US ships were obliged by the Chinese to anchor at Whampoa, of which the nine-tier pagoda is a landmark. They then transferred to small boats for the trip up the Pearl River to Canton to trade. See The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Carl L. Grossman, 1991, pl.56 and Philadelphians and the China Trade 1784-1844, 1984, p.159 for illustrations of the pagoda and the approach.
A good Tokyo porcelain Vase by Kawamoto Masukichi II for Namikawa Sosuke, c.1875, the celadon green body painted by Fusanobu, Tokyo, signed in gold, with a myriad of crabs, some behind white enamel netting hung from a rope and tassel-tied cloth with wisteria, blue Seto Kawamoto Masukichi sei, red trade mark ue (Best) Nihon Tokyo, Namikawa sei, very slight wear, 35cm (8) For comparable marks, see Meiji Ceramics, Gisela Jahn, n.d., p322. The shape is based on a natsume - a presentation tea jar.
BR(S) enamel Station Sign TOWN CENTRE with right facing arrow, white on green, then beneath FOR WEST STATION STRAIGHT AHEAD TURN RIGHT THEN FIRST LEFT, green on white in a panel. F/F measuring 36" x 30". Excellent condition with deep colour and shine and only minor chips. Ex Tunbridge Wells station.
