ICON - MARY OF KAZAN AND BABY JESUS 1890 Russia St. Petersburg Oil on wood, silver, cloisonné 23 x 18,5 cm, 750 g The Madonna of Kazan, the protector of the city, is one of the classic Orthodox motifs. According to legend, a similar icon acquired from Constantinople was long lost in the 13th century and miraculously appeared 140 years later. Very important cathedrals are dedicated to this Madonna in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Mary and Jesus are painted realistically in warm colors, the silver montage bears traces of gilding, a border with repoussé leafy patterns, inscriptions in enamel, a halo and corner panels made using the cloisonné technique. Hallmark of manufacturer "IF" and 84 zolotnik silver.
THE ICON OF MARIA'S NATIVITY 1890 Oil on wood, silver, cloisonné 22,5 x 18 cm, 642.7 g Signed: In cyrillic "V.S." The birth of Theokotos - Mary, belongs to the classic academic scenes that appear on Russian icons. The motif is mistaken for the birth of the Lord, but it is the setting of the scene that reveals what scene it really is. The birth of Mary is described in the Protoevangeliumof James. While Jesus' birth takes place in the wilderness and in the cave, Mary was born into a wealthy family in the palace chambers. The silver icon is framed with wrought floral decoration, halos and corner panels are decorated with cloisonné enamel. Hallmark of purity84 zolotnik.
