A pair of South Staffordshire enamel pedestal salts, enamelled with rural scenes within raised scroll cartouches, spiralled bases, 6cm wide, c.1790; another, smaller, with raised gilt scrolls, pad feet, 4cm diam, c.1790 (3) Condition Report: Please see attached images. The pair with losses, wear and restoration. The other singular good.
A Russian enamel Khodynka cup, dated 1896, also known as The Cup of Sorrows. Height 10.5 cm. NOTE - This was made for the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II & Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896, bearing the ciphers of Nicholas and Alexandra with Romanov eagle on the opposing side, these beakers were distributed at their Coronation and it is reported that over 1000 people were trampled to death in a stampede for the mugs which were erroneously rumoured to contain a gold coin. CONDITION REPORT: There are a few small chips to the enamel rim, the largest being approximately 1 cm. The main body colours are faded but still intact with no obvious cracks or chips. There is a small patch to the upper left of the monogram which is a series of small cracks but these are firing cracks made in production. There is a similar patch on the interior which are circumference lines but again produced in manufacture. There are no major obvious dents.
A 19th century walnut veneered Vienna style regulator wall clock, having an enamel dial with 8 day movement, the columns and mouldings heightened with gilding. Height 84 cm, width 34 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This is a spring driven clock. The case is in reasonably good order. The triangular pediment is in good condition all round. The gilt moulding that runs beneath the pediment is 50% missing on the left-hand return. The sides of the case are a little stained and marked. There are scuffs to the front and side edges beneath the door. Some gilding is missing to the moulding beneath the bottom platform. The movement does appear to strike when advanced but the hammer is not fitting the gong. The face has some enamel losses and small hairline cracks. The movement winds on the strike train but is fully wound on the going train. It is however currently ticking away.
Parkinson & Frodsham, London, a late 19th century "Buhl" case with gilt metal mounts, the enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals inscribed Examined by Parkinson & Frodsham, 15 Royal Exchange, the eight day movement striking on a bell with sun king pendulum, on matching platform and under a glass dome with later ebonised stand. 44 cm overall (see illustration).
Four Chinese porcelain vases, late 20th century, including a pair with black ruyi head and pendants above the main body with polychrome enamel flowering peony decoration and seal marks to the reverse for Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi printed in green "Made in China", height 31.3 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The pair of vases are in good condition with no damage, repairs or restoration. There are no cracks. The top rims have lost all of the gilding however. The small vase is in good order with no condition issues. The single larger vase has had a break to the top lip and a section glued. There is some rubbing to the black pattern beneath the rim. Other than the damage to the lip the condition is good.
A Chinese dished plate, Tongzhi period, decorated with white and blue enamel lotus flowers with gilt double Shou and four stylised white bats, all against a blue ground with gilt rim, 24.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are no chips on the rim. The gilding on the rim is 90% intact. The colours of the enamels are good. There is a very fine hairline crack (possibly only in the glaze) running from the rim to almost the foot rim. The crack cannot be seen on the surface only on the underside. It does require looking for as it is not instantly obvious as it is so fine. The plate still rings out.
A large Canton enamel chamber pot and cover, second half of 19th century, decorated with panels of figures, birds and insects against a gilt ground with green scrolls and butterflies, the lid border with numerous bats. Diameter 26.7 cm (excluding handle), height 17 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The gilding to the knop is worn but still very much intact. There are small losses to the enamels on the rim border. The underside of the rim shows a small fingernail size chip. The unglazed section of the underside rim looks as if it has been whitewashed, but no further damage or restorations are visible. The gilding framing the fan shape panels on the top of the rim are all rubbed and the majority of them are missing. The unglazed section of the bowl rim also has that whitewashed appearance but again no restorations are visible. There are small nibbles to the interior rim. On the exterior body of the chamber pot there are chips to the enamels throughout though these are not instantly obvious. The bottom section of the handle has small chips and a fine crack all around. The upper section of the handle where it joins the body has a small firing crack but appears to be intact. Both the chamber pot and the lid ring out nicely when lightly tapped.
Chinese ceramics 18th/19th century, comprising a flared petal shaped cup, finely painted with birds amongst blossoming flowers and rockwork, a pair of Dehua Blanc de Chine cups with applied relief blossoming prunus sprigs, a pair of 18th century saucers, a yellow ground dragon plate with Fuku, an octagonal yellow ground dish, a Famille Rose jug, a circular celadon dish and a tea bowl (10). CONDITION REPORT: Both Blanc de Chine cups have kiln dirt within the glaze and both have brown oxide tips to the applied sprigs, one more so than the other. One cup also has two large hairline cracks and an 8 mm x 2 mm interior rim chip. The flared rim Famille Rose cup has a rim to foot rim hairline crack. There is a small chip to the rim just above the handle. There is a small section of the blue enamel within the rockwork missing but the decoration is very good. The tea bowl has a rim to almost foot rim hairline crack and a further 1.5 cm hairline crack and a 3 cm V shape crack. The jug is missing its cover. The spout has been restored. There is a lot of fritting to the handle. There is a small scratch to the right of the handle around the rim which has been restored. The Celadon dish has a few small nibbles to the rim but no obvious cracks. The octagonal yellow ground plate is missing some of the yellow ground within the main field and there is also rub marks within the main field of decoration. It rings out nicely when lightly tapped and there are no obvious chips or cracks. One saucer has two small rim chips from which issue a 1 cm and 1.5 cm hairline crack. The other saucer is in good order with no obvious faults. The yellow ground dragon plate has four small sections of green enamel missing from the dragon and cloud. The red trail around the pearl is erased and rubbed. There is a small patch of white on the yellow ground. The rim is free from any chips, cracks or repairs.
A Chinese Wucai bowl, 18th/19th century, decorated throughout with carnations and peony, the carnation petals being translucent, with underglazed blue and polychrome enamels heightened with gilding, with pseudo Qianlong seal mark. Width 11.5 cm, height 5 cm. A 19th century polychrome enamel rice bowl cover, decorated with a black and white cat on rockwork surrounded by blossoming flowers and with red Daoguang seal mark, 10 cm diameter (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cover has a 1.5 cm long x 5 mm deep restoration to the rim. There are four small dark spots along the rim which look to be firing flaws. There is a very small chip to the exterior rim +/- 4 mm x 3 mm. On either side of the restored section there are two very fine hairline cracks within the glaze approximately 1 cm and 1.5 cm in length. The cover rings out when lightly tapped. The bowl has a very fine 3.5 cm hairline crack in the glaze running from the rim towards the foot. There is a very fine glaze chip on the exterior of the rim and two very small flea bite size nibbles to the rim. The enamels are in good condition throughout although there are a couple of small marks to the petals, but these are factory flaws and made in production. Please note that the cover and the bowl are two separate items, from two separate periods, it is just a happy coincidence that the cover fits the bowl.
A Japanese polychrome enamel sake bottle, circa 1700, decorated with plants and flowers, waves and ribbons, all beneath a green and yellow banded neck and with key border to foot, 24 cm, a Japanese inverted baluster miniature vase, decorated with birds and butterflies amongst peony, 11 cm, and two Meiji period Japanese Satsuma miniature vases 6 cm and 6.3 cm.
A Chinese Canton porcelain vase, mid 19th century, having a shaped rim above the waisted neck with panels of figures flanked by Shi Shi and Chilong, the body with panels of dignitaries and attendants and verso a battle scene amongst mountains, with peony, chrysanthemum decoration between with magpies, all above a false gadrooned border. Height 61 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a very fine 23 cm long hairline crack running from the bottom of the vase through to the centre. There is a further very fine 29 cm hairline crack issuing from the bottom of the vase up towards the centre and a very fine hairline crack to the left of the warring parties panel. There are also very fine cracks to the underside and a small section approximately 1.5 cm of blown foot rim (caused by a trapped air bubble within the clay). The rim is in good order and free from any chips and cracks. The Shi Shi handles are intact although one pup has a 1 cm section of its tail missing. The Chilong around the shoulder are in good order though one does have a firing crack on one claw. Overall the enamel decoration is good throughout with no obvious losses to the enamel. Other than the faults mentioned it is a good decorative piece.
A Chinese Famille Rose ginger jar and cover, 19th century, the shoulder decorated with Ruyi heads and peonies against a pink ground, the body with lotus flower and lanterns with precious objects all above a yellow ground false gadroon border, with two blue concentric rings to the underside and applied Collectors Inventory No. 136. Height 20.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cover and body of the vase appear to be free from any visible chips, cracks or restorations. There are minor losses to some of the enamel decoration but nothing that is to detrimental in my opinion. Overall in good condition with very few post production issues.
Three Chinese "Batavian" tea bowls and a saucer, 18th century, the interiors decorated with floral sprays and with chocolate brown exterior glaze. CONDITION REPORT: The saucer rim has a small section of fritting. The enamels are slightly rubbed but otherwise good. The saucer rings out when lightly tapped. One bowl has a tiny rim chip from which issues a 2.5 cm exterior hairline crack however the interior crack runs through to the centre of the bowl. A second tea bowl has a rim to base interior fine hairline crack, the exterior shows a fine slither missing and a 5 mm hairline crack. A further tea bowl appears to be in good order with no obvious hairline cracks visible. The enamels on all bowls are slightly faded with the odd chip on the enamel.
A large Canton enamel oval shaped dish, mid 19th century, the body slightly scalloped with panels of figures, birds and butterflies, against a green scroll ground heightened with gilding, all upon a raised foot with decorative foliate border. Width 38.9 cm, height 9 cm, depth 31 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The dish has very small 5 mm x 3 mm shallow chip to the underside of the rim. There is light rubbing to the gilding around the rim. There are some small scratches to the interior circle of gilding. There is rubbing to the enamels in four places where the moulded body raises on each lobe, it is principally on both figure groups to the left and right of the centre and also the bird and insect panels directly above. There are other smaller minor losses to enamels throughout but nothing too significant. In general the body appears to be free from any major cracks, chips or signs of restoration.
A pair of Chinese Famille Verte ginger jars and covers, late 19th/early 20th century, each depicting warriors and a scholar on horseback, one with two concentric rings to the underside and with collectors inventory number 308, and a Chinese globular vase and cover, 20th century, depicting warring figures on horseback and foot and with rubber stamped four character mark to the underside. 19 cm and 21 cm respectively. CONDITION REPORT: The large vase and cover - the cover has a small chip to the enamel on one flower. The main body appears to be in good order and free from any chips, cracks or restorations. |It is not of any significant age. One ginger jar lid as been broken in two and glued. The body is in good order and free from any chips, cracks or restorations. Its matching vase and cover appear to be in good order with no obvious chips, cracks or restorations. The colours are a little washed out on this example and the reds are not as vibrant as its counterpart. This example has two concentric rings to the underside.
A Nanking Cargo blue and white bowl, circa 1752, with traces of enamelled decoration, with Christie's label to the base. Diameter 4.8 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a 6 mm stretch of fritting on the rim. The bowl has originally been decorated with coloured enamels the majority of which are now missing leaving the under-glaze cobalt blue. The coloured enamel on the interior border is erased. The bowl rings out when lightly tapped. The stand is generally in good order.
Le Select - A late 19thC / early 20thC French teal enamel log burning stove by Poele a Bois, Pardon de Paris, the pierced and hinged top having a shallow tray, the body cast with reeded ribbon framing, garland drops and arched central door surmounted with a cartouche marked Le Select Pardon, with further script to the sides, raised on stylised cabriole legs, and having chimney sleeve to the reverse, 57cm H, 53cm W, 35cm D, excluding chimney sleeve.
A late 19thC French ormolu and marble mantel clock by Marti & Cie, circular enamel dial painted with rose garlands, bearing Arabic numerals, eight day movement with bell strike, the case of rococo form, the barrel with Cupid quiver of arrows garland and trailing rose surmount, above flaming faggots on a fluted column, flanked by a maiden pursued by a cherub, raised on a circular base cast with shells and acanthus leaves, on four feet, with key, 48.5cm H.
A late 19thC German walnut cased wall clock, circular brass dial, cast with thistles, enamel chapter ring bearing Roman numerals, eight day movement with coil strike, the case with eagle surmount, pediment with mask and pilaster decoration, the case with glazed and turned demi pilasters, with key, 98cm H.
