FINE SHEFFIELD GOLDSMITHS COMPANY VICTORIAN 18CT GOLD FULL HUNTER POCKET WATCH WITH POWER RESERVE, by VICTOR KULLBERG, numbered 4746, London hallmark for 1885, frosted gilt 3/4 plate movement with helical steel balance spring, cut and compensated balance, white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and outer five minute divisions, subsidiary seconds and up-down dials, blued steel spade hands, polished round hinged case with monogrammed front and back, EW case maker's mark possibly for Ebenezer White, dial and movement signed, 50mm Provenance: private collection south Wales, consigned via our Cardiff officeAuctioneers Note: No. 4746 is specifically reffered to in the hand-written entry in the Day Book of Victor Kullberg, where the Sheffield Goldsmiths Company returned the watch insisting the name of the firm be printed on the dail and engraved on the plate, presumeably instead of Victor Kullberg. Victor Kullberg is recorded as making some of the finest chronometers and he was one of the most successful horologists of the 19th century. He was born in Visby, Sweden in 1824 and worked for LU Jurgensen in Copenhagen, moving to London in 1851. He gained many top medal awards around the world, including nine gold medals with diplomas of honour. Kullberg came top of the Greenwich trials twelve times and was granted the Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1889. He died in 1890. With thanks to Mr Jon Campbell for help in attributing this fine watch.Condition: very minor wear to case, dial with small hairline at 7, minute hand slightly corroded, otherwise super, winds & runs, gross wt. 139.6g

The enamels are slightly untidy around the edges, one in particular appears to have a small loss to a corner. The bowl is very slightly misshapen as is the foot. Unmarked and not sold as silver. In generally good condition commensurate with age.
