Los 275

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel heraldic harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. The pendant is shield shaped in plan view, a suspension loop projecting from its apex. On the front of the pendant, the design of a cross pattée (tincture unknown) is set against a background of red enamel, arms hitherto unattributed to any specific individual or family. Condition: good, slightly bent at base with split in metal. Length: c. 48mm. Discussion: harness pendants had their floruit during the 14th century, often used to adorn the breast-bands of horse harnesses as a means for the bearer to indicate their allegiance or affiliation. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 310

A complete gold 'Posy' type finger ring of probable 17th century date, c. 1600-1700. The ring consists a circular hoop, its outer surface ornately decorated with an alternating pattern of floral sprays and sub-oval panels decorated with incised cross-hatching. Traces of enamel are preserved in the recesses of the former, mostly a light sea-green colour. On the interior of the band, the following inscription is visible in separated, slightly curving script: Favor my affection-followed by the maker's mark of the initials 'R W' in a rectangular cartouche. Condition: very good, slight knock to one side of hoop. An unusually small example. External diameter: c. 14.5mm. Weight: 1g. Provenance: ex English collection, acquired on the UK market in the 1980s.

Los 245

An incomplete cast copper-alloy plate brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-200. The brooch is circular in plan with a raised edge, the reverse face being largely plain with the exception of the pin-lugs and catchplate, the pin now missing. Its front face is ornately decorated with a series of recessed circular cells, a larger central example surrounded by six smaller ones to form a quasi floral motif. Each of the latter is infilled with red enamel, while the cell at the centre retains only the traces of a white metal coating (which also cover various other spots on the brooch, being much eroded). Condition: very good, enamel preserved very well. Diameter: c. 32mm.Discussion: similar brooches discussed by Hattatt (2000), see p. 344, fig. 203.

Los 276

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel heraldic harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. It is lozenge-shaped in plan view, with an integral perforated suspension lug projecting from its apex. The arms blazoned on the front appear as follows: quarterly Or and Gules, on a bend sinister three eagles displayed argent. These appear to be the arms of Blount or Blunt. Preserved in good condition with a relatively even patina, though some encrustation present on the reverse face. Length: 47mm. Discussion: heraldic harness pendants enjoyed their floruit in the 14th century, being utilised primarily on the breast bands of horses as both adornment and to indicate the allegiance of the bearer. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 295

A complete cast copper-alloy, enamel and gilt heraldic harness pendant of Sir Ralph de Monthermer (1270-1325) dating to the Medieval period, c. 1300-1325. The pendant is shield shaped, with a suspension loop at its apex. The blazon on the front of the pendant is as follows: Or, an eagle displayed Vert, beaked and membered Gules. Length: 46mm. Discussion: harness pendants had their floruit in the 14th century, often being attached in rows along the breast-bands of horse harnesses. This example is a significant piece, not only in terms of its condition-but also in that the arms can be connected to a specific individual. Ralph de Monthermer (for a while, styled the Earl of Gloucester and Hertford) is perhaps best known for secretly marrying Joan of Acre, the daughter of Edward I, in 1297. Attaining lands in both Scotland and Ireland through the early years of the 14th century, Monthermer was captured at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314- but quickly released. He died in 1325.Provenance: found Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, 2015.

Los 272

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel heraldic harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. The pendant is shield-shaped, with a suspension loop at its apex. The front face of the pendant bears the following blazon: argent, a crowned lion statant facing left. The background tincture, regrettably, is eroded away completely. Unattributable to any specific family, but similar in some respects to the arms of Gerard de Lisle, of Kingston Lisle, Oxfordshire. Length: 43mm. Discussion: heraldic pendants such as these are relatively common finds, their floruit being the 14th century. Contemporary art sometimes shows them attached to the breast-bands of harnesses, suspended in rows.Provenance: Found Near Bicester, Oxfordshire. Recorded on the PAS as OXON-79E077.

Los 344

A small mixed lot of metal detecting finds. Within this lot, a fragment of a copper-alloy and enamel headstud type brooch dating to the 2nd century,  a small portion of a crucifix (c. 19th century) and a mount in the form of a rampant lion (18th/19th century). Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 263

An incomplete cast copper-alloy gilt and enamel cloisonné disc brooch of the 'Saunderton' type, dating to the Late Early Medieval period, c. 900-1100. The brooch is broadly circular in plan, with high-flanged sides and a total of seven rounded knops extending from its sides (though only two survive complete). The interior of the brooch on its front face is decorated with a background of glassy deep blue enamel, set within which are two yellowy inwardly-facing triangles flanking four teardrop-shaped inserts of alternating turqoise and white that perhaps are intended to represent the petals of a stylised flower. The copper-alloy 'cloisons' or wire borders separating these disparate elements are preserved intact, though rather corroded. The two surviving lugs also demonstrate enamel inlays, both the same deep blue and presumably replicated in the now damaged lugs as well. Condition: some corrosion and damage, inlays well preserved. Diameter: c. 22mm.Discussion: Saunderton type brooches are known quite widely in Britain, though have a distinct focus towards East Anglia. Made to standardised designs and produced in large numbers, they are also known from Dennmark. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 271A

A complete cast copper-alloy gilt and champleve enamel anthropomorphic Limoges mount, dating c. 1150-1300. The mount takes the form of a robed and nimbate standing Saint, who faces the viewer with his hands clasped across his chest. The latter rendered via means of detailed engraving, twelve irregular cells infilled with a now slightly degraded bluish enamel on the front face of the mount are clearly intended to represent folds in his clothing. The face is realistically rendered, with a pointed nose, small mouth-and two small pellets of bluish glass representing eyes. On the back of the head, a circular disc affixed by means of an integral rivet denotes the halo, still able to be rotated. Set along the middle of the mount are two circular rivet holes (now empty) presumably the means by which the mount was attached to something larger. The reverse of the object is plain and slightly domed. Condition: excellent, some corrosion, enamel only slightly leached. Length: c. 64mm. Width at base: c. 23mm. Discussion: The French city of Limoges was a major centre for the production of enamelled metalwork during the 12th and 13th centuries, primarily manufacturing religious items both for the general and high-status markets. Objects such as panels from crucifixes and casket mounts (from which this mount probably originates) as well as dress accessories like buckles are encountered fairly commonly in Britain, though rarely in such good condition. Production at Limoges tailed off in the earlier years of the 14th century, but effectively ended after the sack of the city by Edward the Black Prince in 1370.Provenance: found Micheldever, Hampshire, 2019. Recorded on the PAS as DOR-5ED306.

Los 294

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. The pendant is shield-shaped in plan view, with a rounded suspension loop projecting from its apex. Blazoned on its front face are the arms England as they appeared from the reign of Richard I to the establishment of the House of Lancaster in 1399: Gules, three Lions Or passant guardant. However, on this particular pendant the lions face right instead of left, as is the usual. The red enamel survives extremely well, though the gilt has completely worn away. An impressive piece and preserved well for a detector find. Length: Discussion: harness pendants had their floruit in the 14th century, being utilised as decorative adornments on horse harnesses. A large number are known that blazon the arms of England, some published in Ashley (2002, pp. 10-11, nos. 55-56 and 67). Reference: Ashley, S. 2002. Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk. East Anglian Archaeology 101

Los 283

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel heraldic harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, c. 1300-1400. The pendant is shield-shaped in plan view, a rounded (though cast slightly off-centre) suspension lug projecting from its apex. The following blazon appears on its front face: Vair, three lozenges Gules. Condition: good, even brownish patina, enamel largely intact. Length: c. 40mm. Discussion: unusually well preserved and important in that it can be attributed, this harness pendant corresponds to the Marmion arms of Checkendon, Oxfordshire. The arms as they are displayed here are a variation on those usually encountered: Vair three mascles Gules (Papworth 1874, vol. II, p. 974). Reference: Papworth, J.W. 1985. Papworth's ordinary of British armorials: an alphabetical dictionary of coats of arms belonging to families in Great Britain and Ireland (facsimile of 1874 edition) London: Heraldry Today.Provenance: found Clanfield, Oxfordshire, 2016. Recorded on the PAS database as BH-33092C.

Los 233

An incomplete cast copper-alloy and enamel disc brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-200. It is circular in plan, with a recessed central cell dominating its main body with a raised circular boss at its midpoint. The edge of the latter demonstrates spiraloid arms projecting from its base, around which the field of the recessed cell is infilled with well-preserved red enamel. Surrounding the central boss (and projecting above the enamel), a series of seventeen projecting circular bosses are visible. On the reverse face of the brooch, a double-lugged pin attachment and the catchplate are preserved intact-though the pin is now missing. Condition: very well preserved, enamel exceptionally so. Diameter: c. 27mm.Discussion: compare a practically identical brooch published by Hattatt (1988) see p. 346, nos. 1074-1075.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.Reference: Hattatt, R. 1988. A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches. Oxford: Oxbow Books.

Los 249

A virtually complete cast copper-alloy and enamel disc brooch dating to the Roman period, c. 2nd century AD. The brooch is circular in plan, its upper surface divided into six recessed triangular cells converging around a central hexagonal boss, each cell also possessing a raised circular boss at its midpoint. Enamel inlays survive reasonably well inside these cells, three red and the rest probably blue. On the reverse of the brooch, a double pin-lug retains its axis bar and part of the pin, opposing which on the opposite side of the brooch is an integrally cast catchplate. Condition: some corrosion, otherwise fair. Some damage to catchplate. Diameter: c. 22mm. Discussion: no exact match in Hattatt (1988) but compare broadly p. 344, fig. 203.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 244

A complete cast copper-alloy and enamel continental plate brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-225. The brooch demonstrates a winged head (retaining the hinged pin) and triangular body with three recessed cells-two triangular cells flanking a central elongated rectangular cell. The former retain the remnants of green enamel, while the latter is very eroded but seems to have been red in colour. Projecting from the base of the body is a double transverse collar which transitions into a tapered zoomorphic terminal. The ‘neck’ of the terminal is decorated with four lines of closely spaced crescentic motifs, while the ‘head’ demonstrates a tapered nose and two eyes formed by an adjacent pair of deep, circular recesses. The entire terminal is coincident on its reverse with an integral catchplate. Traces of a white metal coating still visible on portions of the object. Condition: excellent, though the enamel is rather degraded. Trace of old label (since removed) on back of plate. Length: c. 47mm. Width at widest point of place: 29.4mm. Discussion: brooches of this form are thought to be of continental manufacture.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Los 253C

A mixed lot of four cast copper-alloy Roman brooches. Within this lot, two completely intact (including pin and spring) knee brooches of probable continental origin-one demonstrating stamped chevron decoration on the headplate, one zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a water bird and one composite plate brooch (compare Hattatt 1988, p. 354, nos. 594 and 1613) of ogival form, retaining its headloop and blue enamel in the central cell. Condition: all good, mostly even greenish patinas. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
