Starting in parks football in Cardiff he signed for Cardiff City as an amateur left back having been spotted by City coach Jimmy Blair, a former Scottish international full back. He was a regular in the reserves from the mid 1930s but never turned professional. He won 3 Wales Amateur caps and although he never played a first team league game for Cardiff City
