An extraordinary and fine Louis XV-style rosewood and kingwood secretaire en chiffonier,by Hopilliart, Paris c.1880, surmounted by a clock with a striking French drum movement and enamel dial inscribed 'Bugghen & Co A Paris, 1726' over two lidded compartments, a fall front with three dummy drawer fronts enclosing a writing surface and fitted interior, surrounded by sixteen short drawers, all with ornate gilt-bronze handles and mounts, paper label verso reading 'Hopilliart 12, rue...Peres, meubles... Anciens, Reparations',148cm wide43cm deep205cm highCondition report: Ready for a new home.Some minor repairs and splits to veneers.Paper label verso damaged.Lidded compartments appear to be fixed closed.

A French Louis XV tortoiseshell, brass and ormolu-mounted bracket clock,18th century and later, in the manner of André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732), the case of balloon shape, surmounted by a seated putto, housing a movement by Mon Franjus Raison & Boyer Successeurs, the brass and enamel dial set with Roman and Arabic numerals, on scrolling feet and a matching bracket, 23.5cm wide15cm deep 62cm high (2)Condition report: Movement appears to be a 19th-century addition. Rubbing and wear to gilding. Some losses and splits to brass and tortoiseshell. Splits to dial. Some small chips and cracks to enamel. Evidence of alteration and repair. Bracket possibly associated. Some mounts loose. Loss to one ormolu mount at the back of the surmount. Pendulum present and an associated key. Movement appears in need of attention and the clock does not tick when wound. General wear commensurate with age.
A pair of English pottery 'tobacco leaf' dishes,19th century, in the Chinese-export style, each with gilt-heightened lobed rims, painted underglaze, overglaze and in enamels with vibrant flowers and foliage, the underside of the rim decorated with blossoms, 22cm diameter (2)Condition report: Surface wear, rubbing and some small chips to the enamel. Some crazing and manufacturing imperfections. Remnants of tape to one, sticker label to the other.

A small patch of possible retouching to the left of the face, between collar and hair. Dust under the glass. Not seen outside of glazed frame.
A late 18th/early 19th century Chinese Canton enamel teabowl, cover, & saucer, each decorated with scrolling flowers on a turquoise ground, with painted landscapes in reserves (saucer 4¾” diam., teabowl 2” high); together with a similar later oval tray, 4” x 3”; & a matching matchbox holder, 2¼” x 1½”; & three later cloisonné models of snails & a quail. (largest 2¾” high).

Arber-Cooke was an antiquarian and avid collector of Asian works of art, coins and antiquities principally collecting from the 1930s to the 1970s. He amassed a good reference library on Chinese & Asian coins and wrote on several occasions (1969-70) to to the academic F.A. Turk regarding the study of coin amulets and other non-currency coinages of China. A number of the Asian numismatic reference books will be offered in our 29th March sale.Arber-Cooke initially lived in Wimbledon, Greater London and was involved with the Surrey Archaeological Society. He wrote the book 'Old Wimbledon', with a foreword the MP Sir Arthur Fell, published in 1927. A Chinese Canton (Guangzhou) enamel stand and two similar dishes, Qianlong period, sections from a once larger stand or even pagoda, finely painted with lotus flowers and scrolling leaves and other flowers on a yellow ground within ruyi head borders, the stand decorated with pierced taotie masks and the shaped base with archaistic dragons, the two separate trays of canted square form with shou medallions to the corners, with lots of spare holes for additional supports probably once having a balustrade, the stand 30cm wideCONDITION: The large stand section has dents and losses to the enamel around the pierced taotie frieze and the very edge of the base, the two additional trays have some occasional splintering and losses to the enamel and all parts there are lots of spare holes where other sections would have been stacked upon each other, now missing, the stand also would have had projecting sections on the corners like a pagoda.
Week's Museum. A Regency gilt brass and mahogany drum case mantel timepiece, with urn final, enamel dial and sweeping second hand, swept squared base and lion's paw feet, chain fusee movement with anchor escapement and adjustable pendulum, height 12.5in.CONDITION: Looks to be in very good relatively recently restored condition with all the gilt work in good order, dial with signs of very light crazing particularly between 6 and 8 o'clock so perhaps has seen some retouching or restoration, numerals look good and clean, again probably restored, woodwork definitely re-polished. Movement looks complete but not tested for timekeeping, comes with the original pendulum, back has a lower brass door to allow access to the pendulum, feet have adjustable pads at the back.
A Staffordshire pearlware group of a huntsman with dog and gun, c.1820-30, on a turquoise and blue highlighted scrollwork base, 18.5cm highCONDITION: Tip of the huntsman's garden is restored, very slight flaking to the enamel colours on his hat, some fine crazing to the glaze all over otherwise in good condition.Provenance: Leonard Russell Collection of Pearlware Pottery
A 19th century Austro-Hungarian silver, green enamel and gem set mounted agate sweetmeat bowl, with putto surmount (a.f.), on a silver and champleve polychrome enamel stand, height 8cm, bowl diameter 91mm, gross 221 grams.CONDITION: One drum stick broken/missing in hand of the putto. Some loss/damage to the green enamelling on the bowl. Some minor loss/damage to the enamelling on the stand.
An early George II gold, rock crystal rose cut diamond and black enamel memento mori ring, the central rock crystal with skull beneath, the shank inscribed 'ROB BENE ARM OB27 MAY 1733 AET80', size K, gross 2.3 grams.CONDITION: Some minor wear to the facet edges on the crystal. Some minor loss/damage to the black enamel.
A Victorian gold, enamel, split pearl and cabochon garnet set serpent necklace, with heart shaped drop, with two glazed back panels en verso and snakelink chain, overall 48cm, serpent section 50mm, gross 21.9 grams.CONDITION: Some minor damage, loss to the enamel. Small old repair to the chain (gold solder). One of the glazed panels has been pushed inwards.

An American Pearlware sailor Toby jug with hat, 'Success to our Wooden Walls, c.1820, on a naturalistic base with similar handle, 27cm highCONDITION: The blue enamels of his coat have been completely repainted as has the brow of his hat which has possibly some restoration beneath, the separate hat has been broken and re-glued and again the black enamel has probably been repainted, there is fine crazing to the glaze all over with some occasional small areas of staining, there is some heavy scratching just above his right knee, some flaking to the enamels on the naturalistic base and handle, otherwise in reasonable condition.Provenance: Leonard Russell Collection of Pearlware Pottery
A Meissen porcelain monkey teapot and cover, circa 1735, modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the seated monkey naturalistically coloured, wearing an iron red and gilt belt, her young in her arms and on her back forming the spout and handle, unglazed base, 19.5cm highCONDITION: There are tiny fritted and unglazed patches all over. The cover has losses to the leaves, a tiny splinter chip to the edge and a broken and loosely pinned fruit finial. The seated monkey's left foot is restored with discoloured and slightly cracked restoration around the area.
