A gentleman’s 18ct gold keyless lever openface pocket watch, the circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial signed Cha’s Frodsham, London 08149, the three-quarter backplate with repeat signature in a plain 18ct gold case with attached 9ct gold curb-link watch chain.
Thomas Mudge and William Dutton. A silver pair-cased pocket watch, the white enamel circular dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for minutes, the fusee chain and cylinder escapement with foliate pierced cock and backplate inscribed Tho Mudge London 665, the dust cover inscribed ‘Tho Mudge W Dutton London’ in a later silver case with hallmarks for London 1847 together with a turned oak watch stand under glass dome.
Hunt & Roskell, London, an 18ct gold full hunter pocket watch, having a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, blued steel spade hands and signed ‘Hunt & Roskell, London’, the chain fusee three-quarter plate movement having a plain three-arm balance to the lever escapement with an engraved backcock, the backplate signed ‘Hunt & Roskell, 156 New Bond St, London, No. 11068’, the full hunter case having engine turned decoration to the front and back and hallmarked for 18ct gold, London 1896 with the case maker’s initial’s ‘H.W’, diameter: 45mm. * Hunt & Roskell was the final partnership in a business that started as Paul Storr & Mortimer, then Mortimer & John Hunt after the dissolving of the former in 1838 with an address at 156 New Bond Street, before Mortimer retired in 1843 allowing Robert Roskell jnr and C.F. Hancock to take an interest before the latter set up on his own account in 1849 leaving Hunt and Roskell as sole proprietors.
International Watch Co, Schaffhausen, a full hunter, keyless 14ct gold pocket watch, having a white enamel dial with black Breguet-style Arabic numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, gold spade hands and signed ‘International Watch Co, Schaffausen’, the movement having a lever escapement with a split bi-metallic compensating balance and stamped with the ‘IWC’ trademark and serial number ‘515380’, the full hunter case with engine-turned decoration to the front and back and stamped ‘14K’ with a repeat of the trademark and serial number ‘564578’, diameter: 52mm.
H. Greenwood & Son, Huddersfield, a 9ct gold full hunter keyless pocket watch, having a white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals, blued steel spade hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and signed ‘H, Greenwood & Son, Huddersfield & Leeds, Maker to the Admiralty’, the movement similarly signed and numbered ‘385108’ having a lever escapement with a split bi-metallic compensating balance, the plain full hunter case hallmarked for 9ct gold, Birmingham, 1923, diameter: 48mm.
Illinois, ‘Bunn Special’ keyless open-faced pocket watch, the white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and signed ‘Illinois’, the movement having a lever escapement with a split bi-metallic compensating balance and signed ‘Illinois Watch Co, Springfield, Bunn Special, 3857092’, the gold filled case stamped ‘Keystone Watch Case’; diameter: 50mm.
Columbia, a keyless hunter pocket watch, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, blued steel spade hands and signed ‘Columbia’ the movement signed ‘Columbia Watch Co’, the full hunter case engraved with floral decoration to the front and back, diameter: 40mm.
An 18ct gold pair cased openface pocket watch, the fusee verge movement with backplate inscribed Jonathan Purchis, Margate, No 31’ with a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals in an 18ct gold case with hallmarks for London 1690, with gold plated swivel and an outer case engraved with cherubs amongst scrolling foliage, together with a shagreen covered carrying case.
Straub & Hepting. A gentleman’s 18ct gold, keywound lever openface pocket watch, the backplate inscribed ‘Borough, No 137452’, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial in an engine-turned 18ct gold case with a 9ct gold curb-link watch chain attached with spiral reeded propelling pencil, fob seal and two brass and steel keys.
Dent au Brassus. A gentleman’s 18ct gold keyless lever openface repeat pocket watch, the signed circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, the movement with repeat signature numbered 20348, the dust cover with monogram ‘CJD’, the repeat mechanism not working, in an 18ct gold case with slide button in the band.
A 19th century Vienna gilt metal and enamel charger in the manner of Hermann Ratzendorfer, of shaped circular form, the centre panel decorated with a gathering of the gods, enclosed within two rows of twelve panels with further subjects and figures of Greek mythology, each panel titled to the reverse, the cagework mounts with applied Egyptianesque mask, swan and urn ornament with dividing bands of mask and scroll trellis decoration, 56cm. diameter, contained in its original octagonal leather covered fitted case.
Henri Jacot a Paris. An Anglaise carriage clock, having an eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with push button repeat, with a later platform lever escapement, the backplate stamped with the trademark & serial number of the maker ‘Henri Jacot, 14752’, with the ‘secret’ Jacot mark stamped between the plates, the cream enamel dial having stylised Arabic numerals within white roundels and decoration to the centre, with blued steel spade hands, contained in a beaded brass Anglaise case, height 19cm. * The Jacot clockmaking firm was one of the most well known and best maker’s of carriage clocks in the Victorian period with an address at 31, Rue de Montmorency, Paris. The first Henri Jacot died in 1868 and was succeeded by his nephew also Henri. They won many medals at exhibitions in both Paris and London including the Gold medal in 1900.
E. White, Paris. A French striking carriage clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a gong, with push button repeat, the backplate stamped with the serial number ‘3687’, having a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and signed with the name ‘E. White, Paris. 33 Cockspur Street, London’, contained in a Corniche case, height: 14cm, handle down. * E. White was formerly a foreman with the well-known clockmaking firm Dents before setting-up on his own account in Cockspur Street circa 1865 as both a maker and retailer with a workshop address in Paris.
An Edwardian French enamelled carriage clock, having an eight day duration movement with a replaced platform lever escapement, the ivorine dial having blued steel decorative hands and cloisonne enamel mask which is repeated to the top and bottom friezes of the Anglaise case, with fluted columns and handle, height: 13cm, handle down. With original leather case.
A miniature French carriage clock, the eight day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking on a gong with push button repeat, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands and with the maker’s name ‘Hy Marc a Paris’, contained in a Cannallee style case, height: 10cm, handle down. Contained in a leather travelling case. * Henry Marc is recorded as both a maker & retailer working in Paris in the late 19th Century. The vast amount of clocks seen with this name on them would suggest the firm were in the main retailers with clocks supplied by Japy Freres, amongst others.
New Haven Clock Co. An Art Nouveau ‘Four-Glass’ mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a gong, with a visible escapement to the dial front and with the pendulum bob set with paste brilliants, the two-piece white enamel dial having stylised black Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and stamped with the maker’s name ‘New Haven Clock Co, New Haven, Elgin, USA’, the brass four-glass case having gilt spelter adornements in the Art Nouveau taste, height: 41cm. * The New Haven Clock Company was one of the most famous makers in the New England region of America having been formed in 1853 and at one point employing over 460 workers. Financial difficulties saw the company taken over in 1902 by Walter C. Camp, better known as the ‘Father of American Football’. It took over the English sales firm Jerome & Co. Ltd. before becoming bankrupt and ceasing operations in 1960.
A mixed lot of silver items comprising: an unmarked dog paperweight the dog lying on a resin base a set of six silver and enamel coffee bean end spoons a German silver mounted wallet with applied motifs a German cigarette case a continental snuff box with chased decoration and an electroplated fish knife with a carved ivory handle. A Louis XVI poudre d’ecaille and gold mounted portrait box the miniature by Guiseppe Tresca signed and dated 1783 the gold mounts by Louis-Jean Glaton with the charge and discharge marks of Henri Clavel Paris 1783 the circular blue poudre d’ecaille cover with inlaid gold stud-work with wirework mounts the underside unscrews to reveal a portrait miniature on ivory of a lady in a blue and pink dress with a white shawl holding a bunch of pink roses under glass with a gold frame with a blue enamel frame and motto ‘HONNI. SOIT. QUI. MAL.Y. PENSE. AMITIE. PARFAITE’ gold lined interior in a later fitted Harvey and Gore case diameter 8cm.
By Leslie Durbin a silver and enamel commemorative dish London 1941 also engraved ‘L.G.DURBIN ME FECIT’ circular fluted form spot-hammered decoration mounted with a crowned W V S in red enamel for the Women’s Voluntary Service the underside with a Tudor Rose boss diameter 12.2cm approx. weight 6oz.
