ALI & NICKLAUS: ALI MUHAMMAD (1942- ) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion & NICKLAUS JACK (1940- ) American Golfer who holds the record for the most victories in major championships. An excellent, extremely rare signed colour 13.5 x 11 photograph by both Ali and Nicklaus individually, the image depicting the two men standing in an amusing full length pose together on the PGA Championship golf course at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. Signed by both sportsmen with their names alone in bold black ink to light areas of the image. Matted in green and ivory alongside two engraved plaques, one reading The Greatest meets The Greatest and the other certifying that the signed photograph is number two in a strictly limited edition of eleven. 22 x 22.5 overall. VG The image records the first time Ali and Nicklaus met, in 1996. The photograph was taken by Peter Turrell and is believed to be one of only eleven prints worldwide. The engraved plaque states that four of the prints are in the private collections of Ali and Nicklaus, leaving only seven available to purchase.
DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. Blue ink signature and three lines of text in his hand on a piece neatly removed from the conclusion of a letter. Dickens writes, in full, `...for me one copy of Little Dorrit, and one copy of Old Curiosity Shop, both cheap editions.` Professionally and attractively matted in ivory with gold coloured edges beneath an oval image of the novelist and framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 18.5 x 24. A desirable example in which Dickens makes reference to two of his most famous works. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG
ROWLING J. K.: (1965- ) British Author of the Harry Potter books. Signed colour 7.5 x 9.5 reproduction of an artist`s illustration depicting Harry Potter and several other characters. Signed in bold black ink with her name alone across a clear area of the image. Matted in ivory alongside a copy of a T.L.S. by Rowling`s Personal Assistant, sending `the Harry Potter cards all signed by J K Rowling to be used for your find raising`, 29th April 2002. DIANA: (1961-1997) Princess of Wales. Signed colour 4 x 6 photograph of the Princess in a head and shoulders pose wearing a red coat and matching hat. Signed (`Diana`) in bold black fountain pen ink with her name alone to the lower photographers mount. Matted in red and ivory to an overall size of 10 x 10. VG
GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. D.S., Appd. G. R. I., as King, at the head, one page, 4to, n.p. (London), n.d. (December 1932). The document is in the form of a T.L.S. by British Prime Minister J. Ramsay MacDonald, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 24th December 1932, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister in which he seeks His Majesty`s approval of his recommendation that the Reverend Osbert Mordaunt Burrows be appointed to the Rectory of Epworth. One small file hole to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signatures. Matted in ivory and framed and glazed to an overall size of 10.5 x 12.5. VG
GEORGE VI: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. D.S., Appd. G R, as King, at the head, one page, 4to, n.p. (London), n.d. (May 1950). The document is in the form of a T.L.S. by British Prime Minister Clement Attlee, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 17th May 1950, in which he seeks His Majesty`s approval of the recommendation that the Reverend Charles William Leslie be appointed to the Vicarage of Rampton in the County of Nottingham. One small file hole appears in the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signatures. Matted in ivory and framed and glazed to an overall size of 10.5 x 12.5. VG
THATCHER MARGARET: (1925- ) British Prime Minister 1979-90. Good A.L.S., Margaret Thatcher, two pages, 8vo, Chester Square, London, 19th December 1991, to Robert Charles Broughton, on Thatcher`s blue printed House of Commons stationery. Thatcher states that she is writing with goodwill and kind thoughts from herself and Denis and continues `It has not always been an easy year-but the human spirit is wonderful as you know, and we battle on. I remember Winston [Churchill] saying "Never give in, Never give in" and what an example he was to us all.` In concluding she remarks `At this Christmastide you will have the joy of family and friends about you and that is the greatest gift of all.` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Thatcher. Together with a signed and inscribed Christmas greetings card by Thatcher, also signing on behalf of her husband, featuring a colour illustration of the House of Commons and River Thames. The letter, envelope and Christmas card have been matted alongside each other in ivory and framed and glazed (to both sides) in a wooden and gold coloured frame to an overall size of 26 x 22. VG
A fine late 19th century ivory and silver mounted presentation baton, with embossed silver top and band inscribed "Presented to Lieut. A.B Woodcock, Band Master, Pretoria Volunteer Cavalry by the Members of the Band 19.3.96" in fitted case. Provenance: given to John Brice Jenkins (1876-1923) in recognition of his work during the war-whilst serving in France in WWI he raised a Welsh Choral party from the trenches which toured the greater part of the country. It has passed through the family to the current vendor.
A Queen Victoria India General Service medal with bars for Burma 1885-87 and Samana 1891, awarded to Captain Devereux Walter Hickman (see preceding lot).Major Hickman was born on 3rd August 1857 and was killed on 3rd January 1898. Included in this lot is a framed miniature on ivory of Major Hickman, together with a small framed photograph and a larger photograph of him in uniform, also a photograph of his memorial.
An 18th/19th century hunting sword with a straight blade, bearing indistinct decoration (heavily pitted), length of blade 57cm, with ivory hilt finishing the pommel with a carved lions head and white metal (possibly silver) crossguard terminating in dogs heads, bearing possible hallmark for Continental silver.
