Britannia! A Late 18th Century Ivory Fan with slender monture, carved and pierced in a regular, classical style. The double leaf features a central oval, printed and hand coloured and showing Britannia with her shield, trident and plumed centurion helmet holding the hand of two women, seated one at each side, one with a harp. The oval is bordered with gold sequins and additional sequins in gold and green form a simple upper border. The verso has a pale watercolour image of the recto scene. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm. Together with A Second Printed and Hand Coloured Fan of a similar age, the double leaf showing Venus and Adonis, outside a bower (or military draped tent?), several winged cherubs carrying provisions, stoking flames and gathering flowers or fruit. The verso is plain. Mounted on slender sticks, the gorge of ivory, the guards of tortoiseshell. Guard length approx. 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (2). Britannia is quite sound, but would benefit from cleaning. Slight damage to the leaf seen when held to the light. The second fan has major splits to several folds but is holding. Again, would benefit from cleaning.

Lot 5005

A Bright and Detailed Ivory Fan, circa 1780, the vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise and featuring not only a colourful central pastoral scene with ladies in parkland, a shepherd playing his pipe, his flock to the left, but two large allegorical figures painted en grisaille with gold highlights. To the left, a representation of Victory, to the right, a figure most likely representing the ''Golden Age'', with her attribute of the beehive, a colourful top and side border of floral swags completes the lead. The monture is notable for painted Wedgwood style plaques against a pale mauve ground. The verso is painted with a simple central spray of carnations. Contained in a contemporary fan box, covered in green paper and lined with pink paper, featuring a later label for Duvelleroy at Pass. Des Panoramas 17. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm.. Reasonably good, some light discolouration to the leaf, but strong. Later loop. Damage to the paper on the box exterior.

Lot 5006

A Scarce, Small and Dainty Very Early 19th Century Fan, the ivory monture slender and with diminutive gorge, carved centrally with Chinese figures, the reserves with foliage. The double vellum leaf is most likely unique, as all over, and at all angles, hand written verse or quotations fill all available space. Under magnification it is noted that most language is English, but some French spotted. Two texts deciphered: ''On the creditors of a Western Baronet being appointed to meet at the Devil Tavern. Tradesman must present their skills with bows most civil, Sir Charles, for payment, sends them to the Devil; Herein well preserving his state and rank, for where his creditor's gone, must be his bank!'' and '' A painter, having a picture of the Lord Mayor and Aldermen to refreshen, hesitated whether to use copal (?) or mastic varnish ''neither one nor t'other'', said Peter Pinda ''if you wish to bring the figures out, varnish it with turtle soup!''. Diamante to the rivet ends. Guard length 7.75 inches or 20cm.. Note 2 plain ivory sticks to the gorge which are the first in at either side and may or may not be original. The leaf is marginally crumpled. To one side, some small brown foxing, and three pinholes are noted near the centre, two more to one side and one to the other. Some of the upper folds are slightly split and some previous repair possible. Generally, slightly grubby but quite an amazing survivor.

Lot 5007

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards carved and pierced with a bird amidst foliage, the gorge sticks carved rather more simply, in pairs. The double paper leaf, painted in Chinoiserie fashion mainly in shades of grey to black, shows several figures in an outdoor setting. Two elders are seated to the centre, being approached by a man carrying a basket on a pole over his shoulder. Slightly to the left, a young boy carries a fixed fan. The verso is plain, save for a simple spray of foliage, also in grey. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm. Looking at the gorge sticks it would appear one or more maybe missing. Or perhaps one extra to the left to fit the leaf. The head is perfectly rounded and not misshapen. Some slight rubbing to the leaf, one or two small nicks to the tops of folds, and from the verso some slight period repair to the leaf has been undertaken. The fan is however quite sound.

Lot 5008

Le Réveil Matin: A Late 18th Century Wood Fan, the sticks plain, the slender guards finished with ivory thumb guards. The double paper leaf, engraved and hand coloured to the recto, features a gentle image of a maiden asleep under an arbour, her simple white gown enhanced with a rose-pink cloak, Cupid, flaming torch aloft, leaning close to gently sound an awakening call with his curved horn. Entitled ''Le Reveil Matin'' (the morning awakening). The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm. Purchased at Christie's SK, 16th May 1989, lot 103. Together with A Much Later Fan with double paper leaf in strong red, depicting a street scene painted in gold, a coach and horses about to depart, having delivered a lady to join her friends and a small child, the ladies all wearing Regency gowns and the gentleman and small boy in long coat and breeches. The verso is painted with a simple spray of foliage. The simple wood monture, with regular piercing, is painted ruby red. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27.5cm. (2). The first fan, is in good shape overall, with Light rubbing to some folds, and to the dark border.

Lot 5009

A Circa 1730 Ivory Fan, the vellum leaf a l'Anglaise and painted in gouache en grisaille, showing a maiden, seated in the grounds of an interesting residence, one sheep to her side, other figures approaching. The monture, carved and lightly pierced, is painted to match with flowers in shades of grey, the gorge with a large central floral cartouche and the reserves with music and instruments. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm.. In good order, slightly foxed to the verso, when held to the light, two or three minute slits to the leaf noted but not immediately visible otherwise, as under the painted design.

Lot 5010

A Good 18th Century Ivory Fan with detailed and complex carving to the monture. Slender, the head carved as a shell, the shoulder to head section merits attention when closed as well as open. The upper guards are carved with meandering foliage, ivy leaves and berries. The double paper leaf is silvered, the upper border découpé, with further panels of this work appearing on most folds. The Chinoiserie design shows a lady seated under the shade of a parasol, scrolls, a traditional vase and sprays of flowers completing the scene. The verso is painted with a simple floral spray. Contained in the bottom half of a period card fan tube covered in muted green paper. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm.. Both guards have tiny nails at the shoulder, but if these were repairs, they are strong and done long ago. One sliver of ivory missing in the central gorge, one of the half circles that protrude from the side. Tube lid lacking.

Lot 5011

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the vellum leaf mounted à L'Anglaise, the upper guards carved with a profile of a lady to the recto and a gentleman to the verso, and a stylised vase. The gorge sticks are pierced with a regular design. The leaf features a lady seated at the roadside near to a church with steeple, engaged in conversation with a traveller who has doffed his cap in her presence. To the right, a vignette showing a gentleman in front of a rural dwelling, a lady on a riverbank to the right. The three scenes are bordered in gold and the reserves feature cornflowers, red roses and violets. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm. Together with Another 18th Century Fan in similar vein, the upper guards carved with Chinoiserie, the gorge pierced with two main circular panels. The double paper leaf features a real menagerie of animals. Centrally, a courting couple, seated outside a barn, surrounded by sheep, a dog sleeping at their feet, a farmer seemingly eavesdropping behind a bull, and the side vignettes well painted with colourful birds, themselves perhaps indulging in the courting ritual. The reserves are painted with colourful flowers. The verso features a simple but colourful floral spray. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (2). The first fan has some nibbles to the central folds seen when held to the light. The leaf has been cut down on the second fan, and each first stick in from the guards is stuck to a guard.

Lot 5012

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf en grisaille in sea green, with a touch of flesh colour for faces and hands. A courting couple, seated under an arbour, are joined by others, appearing to converse. The monture, carved and pierced to the upper guards, with flowers and foliage, has a central oval to the gorge, the remaining sticks painted the same sea green, complementing the leaf. The verso features a simple dwelling and landscape. Bears an old auction label stating a date of 21st October 1970, and 296/2, presumably the lot number. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan with plain royal blue fabric leaf, probably a gentleman's fan, the upper guards plain, the lower section and gorge elaborately carved and pierced with figures and decorative ovals; Another Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with simple decoration to upper guards and gorge, the double paper leaf colourfully painted with a family outing in the countryside, the adults taking their repose under a tree, a boy playing with his dog, being observed by a peasant girl in country bonnet carrying a burden on her back. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 25cm (3). The first fan is in reasonable order with foxing to the verso and an odd split to a fold. The gentleman' s fan has a badly split leaf with tape applied to the verso to secure it. The third fan has several complete splits to the leaf folds and attempts have been made in the past to restore it.

Lot 5013

Chinoiserie in the 18th Century: Four 18th Century Fans, the first being early and elaborately decorated, with gold foil shapes to the top border, and in three places extending down the leaf, with the addition of foil shells and other miscellaneous motifs. The leaf, divided into three panels, features figures in robes, a humped bridge, and buildings. Stylised foliage and trees are discretely highlighted with gold. The monture, with plain gorge, is piqué to both guards with the addition of Mother of Pearl in the form of a figure, a fish and a leaf, and thumb guards. The double paper leaf features finely painted flowers and leaves to the verso. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with a slender early 18th fan with shaped lower monture, giving rise to interesting detail when the fan is closed and viewed from the side, the double paper leaf painted in subtle colours, showing a wealthy gentleman in robes and black hat, escorted by a servant shading him from the sun with an enormous parasol, suddenly encountering a monkey on a tree branch ahead. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm; a third ivory fan, the upper guard and lower gorge sections carved and shaped, the double paper leaf painted to the recto with delicate flowers and unusually figures wearing white robes. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm; and finally, a Chinese carved ivory fan with export monture, the guards designed in panels, the flowers and buildings minutely carved, the gorge pierced with a central shield containing entwined initials ''M ?'', intricate and elaborate carving of flowers and leaves climbing a minute lattice filling the remaining space. The double paper leaf, with cream ground, is designed with a central cartouche of a pagoda and walled garden near water, a figure at the bank greeting a passing boatman, mountains rising in the background. The reserves are filled with sprays of flowers and leaves in pastel colours. The verso is painted with larger floral sprays. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (4). The first fan has damage to the leaf and possibly the right side shortened, crude restoration to split folds seen from the verso. The second example is in good general order. Fan 3 has extensive splitting to the leaf making it difficult to view the scene. The final fan has some damage to the leaf, the upper guard has broken, but the section is present, both still attached to leaf and rivet, and the lower guard has broken off at a similar point and lacks approx. 2.5 m of a plain lower section.

Lot 5014

Three 18th Century Ivory Fans, to include an unusual example with recto/verso painted on vellum en grisaille with a depiction of rolling English fields and copses stretching well into the distance under a cloudy sky. The more focused scene on the verso shows perhaps a tombstone or animal grave marked with a cross, close to a stone cottage (or is it simply a well?). The monture is well carved and the guards both feature a seated lady, and flowers. The gorge centre is elaborately pierced, the focus being on a shepherdess and her suitor in a shaped oval cartouche. Small square side vignettes are carved with flowers in containers, and all other sticks feature scrolling and flowers, the lower gorge particularly attractive with overlapping design. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with Joseph: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, probably Dutch, the vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the upper guards carved with the profile of a man to the upper guard and a lady to the lower, together with a vase and perched bird. The gorge is carved with three ovals, containing chinoiserie figures. The leaf features Joseph in the centre, and money changing hands. A camel is tethered in the bushes to the right. Side vignettes feature fruit. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Circa 1760's Découpé Fan, the monture of ivory, the upper guards carved and pierced and painted with flowers and bands of turquoise, complementing the painted gorge. The leaf features a distinctive bird, perched on a branch of blossom. To the left, a stylised vase, an open fan with floral leaf placed on the top. The decoupage is worked along the top border and in several sections in the body of the fan Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (3). The scenic fan has subtle leaf repairs to either side, a nailed ivory repair to the lower section of the upper guard and another ivory repair to the first stick in adjacent. Repair near the lady on the upper guard. No signature noted. Joseph: the leaf is slightly tired and several folds are taped from the verso to prevent small splits enlarging. Lacking some sections to some ribs. A little grubby. The découpé fan lacks a rivet, and some parts of the leaf to the upper right. The tip of the lower guard has damage but is present, and some tape has been applied onto the verso over some of the leaf.

Lot 5015

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards particularly well carved and silvered with a painted Chinoiserie figure to the top and a tiny figure within a pagoda beneath. Various figures and pagodas are painted in colour to the gorge. The bold leaf in strong gold is painted with a large and colourful bird, perched amongst bright pink and orange blooms. The verso is formed from a peppermint green paper printed with gold flowers. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm. Together with An Earlier 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks slender and seen to be narrower than the gorge when closed. The guards are carved with stylised vases and other objects and the background to these has been painted in shades of brown. The double leaf shows a solitary musician in colourful robe seated behind a strung instrument, under the shade of a contorted tree, with flowering blossom. A colourful bird in flight, and a jardiniere on stand holding flowers, complete the scene. The verso features a simple floral spray. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 28.5cm; and A Third Ivory Fan, mid-18th century, the upper guards with two painted panels designed with birds and flowers, separated by applied decoration that could be ground mother of pearl, feeling rough but matt in colour. The gorge sticks are plain wood, dyed dark brown. The double paper leaf is subtly painted with flowers in pastels, tinged with gold, and a large bird, listening to a musician playing the flute at a podium accompanied by a younger robed figure carrying a traditional fixed fan. The verso features a simple drawing of a seated figure under a tree, with dog. Guard length approx. 12.25 inches or 31cm (3) . The face of the musician in the second fan is blackened with age.

Lot 5016

Three Mid-18th Century Ivory Fans, the first French, the monture quite simply decorated with a linear design to the upper guards and silvering on the gorge. The silk leaf features a lady in 18th century dress, tall hairstyle, watering her plants in the garden. From this central focus more flowers weave towards the sides of the fan, painted in pastels, their stems of gold thread, and additionally adorned with tiny coloured sequins. The verso is plain cream gauze. Contained in a period card fan tube in pink. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with a similar French fan, the central cartouche showing a musical gathering, two side vignettes painted with rural landscapes, all bordered with tiny gold sequins. The reserves, painted with parrot tulips in red and orange, pink roses, cornflowers and carnations, also feature small flowers and leaves made from applied straw. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27cm; and a third ivory fan, the monture decorated with a regular design of black dots, complementing the double paper leaf, divided into two sections but effectively en grisaille in shades of black through to grey. One scene shows an older lady in white bonnet taking a walk with a small boy, stopping to talk to a passer-by. To the right, a hunting scene, two men on horseback chasing a stag, with two dogs in pursuit. Simple grey flowers painted on the verso. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm (3). The deep pink leaf has faded to soft pink and cream. Most folds are split at some point and one is missing to the far right. The second fan has spits to most folds, sewn at the seams to retain the leaf, other folds having been supported from behind. Silvering to the monture is dull and worn away in places. The third fan has damage to both guards, hard to determine quite how much as they are covered in very yellowed clear tape. The upper section of the lower guard may well be completely missing.

The Toilet of Venus: A Large Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards plain, the lower sections shaped and carved at the shoulder and mid gorge, and particularly at the head, which splays when the fan is open. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm; finally, An 18th Century Ivory Fan with a pink theme. The shaped guards are carved and painted with pink blooms. The gorge has a look of a pagoda fan at the shoulder, with the top of the sticks forming two or three straight sections not usually seen on such a folding fan. The pastoral scene of a musical gathering, led by Cupid playing his pipe, is painted in shades of pink against a silvered background, and the small object painted on the gorge continue this theme. The verso, silvered, is painted with pink flowers. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (3). Good, strong colours retained. Both guards have old nailed repairs with metal plates at the shoulders. Some wear and slight damage mid-leaf bottom edge where the sticks have come detached from the ribs. The second fan has damage to the decoupage. The upper guard lacks the first 5 cm and the other guard looks to have been repaired at the same point. One gorge stick has broken but the section is present, but the colours remain strong. A pretty and feminine fan despite faults. The final fan has a break to the upper guard with a small section missing. That guard is stuck to the first stick in. The silvered leaf is dull, as is the silvering on the guards.
