A 19th century silver French 'Boulle' work serpentine work box, in 18th century style, the exterior with gilt metal mounts and inlaid with foliate scroll mounts and mother of pearl against an ebonised ground, the lid enclosing an elaborate white metal interior with seven lidded compartments with filigree finials, a cartouche shaped raised detailing to the front in a different white metal, the underside of the lid inset with a mirror with embossed scroll frame, carved ivory 'M' monogram to the top and an Italian Micromosaic plaque of St Peters Rome, (alterations / additions), 16.5cm high x 38.5cm wide x 25cm deep CONDITION REPORT: Case - Wear to the ebonised finish. Central brass cartouche lifting and would need attention. Some losses to the mother of pearl inlay, back left brass foot detached, but is present. Interior - appears to be relatively complete, silver finish worn through on compartment lids, silvering to the mirror has perished in places. Small key present but doesn't appear to fit the lock or movement. There are no other keys present. General surface scratching and wear commensurate with age. English School - early 18th century - of Naval interest, Watercolour on ivory portrait miniature, Portrait of Daniel Furzer (d1719) with his son John Furzer and ship behind - presumably HMS Dover, Indistinctly inscribed verso 'Daniel Furzer Lieut RN H.M. Ship Dover killed in action 1719, & his infant and only son John Furzer', 7cm x 5.25cm, Framed and glazedAccording to family notes this Daniel Furzer (c1719) was the son of Daniel Furzer (d 17th Mar 1715), Surveyor of the Navy to William III and brother to John Furzer who was drowned with HM frigate The Hind in 1721 off Jersey. Daniel Furzer junior married Ann Grey. They had one son John Furzer (d1721), a purser in the Royal Navy in charge of HM Dockyard. Daniel Furzer painted here is recorded as being in service on HMS Dover, which saw action against the Spanish off Cape St Vincent on 9/12/1719. It is presumed that the ship painted in this miniature is HMS Dover. CONDITION REPORT: The frame may not be original to the miniature - it is broken at the top and the bottom and held together by old metal supports, there is also an old chip to the frame. The ivory miniature appears to be ok but lightly grubby. There are some small paint losses to the bottom of the sitters hair and a little to the ship and there is some rubbing to the sea and jacket of the son at 4 and 5 o'clock and similar rubbing to the edge at 7 and 8 o'clock. The backing card and paper to the reverse of the miniature are not original. When viewed from the back it would appear that there is a thin film folded over the edge from the front side - this is only be around the edge of the miniature to hold the glass to the miniature.Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. English School - late 18th - of Naval interest, Watercolour on ivory portrait miniature, Portrait of Captain James Furzer Royal Marines, Named verso, 'Captain James Furzer Maine' 'Died HMS Queen 1800',6.5cm x 5cm, In gilt metal frame, glass cracked CONDITION REPORT: There are two thin scratches - possibly a crack, to the face in an inverted V, both coming from the sitters right eye, one extends down to the neck, the other extends across to the left into the hair. The glass has an old crack at the bottom and some moisture or water may have got onto the image along this crack. The miniature is lightly grubby, with three internal 'bits of dirt' and four dead 'bugs' trapped behind the glass visible. There is a white blemish to the lower right of the frame at about 4 o'clock and a spot blemish. The back of the frame has an old label which is heavily browned. The internal woven hair has some internal 'bits of dirt' and some discolouration at edge - old damp marks. Frame with general age wear. Officer with the grey wig - a blemish to the darker area at the back of the neck or this is a ribbon in the hair. Some small 'blooming' visible to the red of the racket. Other officer - two degraded patches to the top, a brown blemish to he face and a black blemish to the neck / collar. Oriental hilt with brass mounts, decorated and engraved with floral motifs, ivory grip scales, with brass rivets and chain. Gilded, brass scabbard, engraved with floral motifs, two suspension rings, with thick rope in golden thread. Scarce. length 89 cm.
dating: 1902 provenance: Daghestan, Straight, double-edged blade with deep, asymmetrical groove, a gold-inlaid mark on the right side and finest, gilded, engraved floral motifs among the bird's heads. Horn grip of typical shape, with iron mounts, finely engraved and gilded with floral motifs. Wooden, leather-covered scabbard with iron mounts, decorated en suite, the cap in back part, signed 'Amal Ali'. Small knife with blade in damask, decorated in gold at the base, and with walrus ivory grip scales. length 63 cm.
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Persia, Curved, single-and false-edged blade with central raiser next to the foible and 'T'-back in the first part, the base and back decorated with golden floral and geometrical motifs. Fine, walrus ivory grip, finely embossed with reining figure with scepter and court figures among floral motifs. Wooden scabbard, covered with bordeaux velvet (completely worn) with silver mounts, engraved with a frame with floral motifs. Stamp with tughra and another stamp. length 39.5 cm.
