A CHINESE CARVED IVORY CARD CASE AND COVER CARVD ON ST HELENA by an indentured labourer with a view of Longwood House inscribed Napoleon`s House and, on the reverse, with Napoleon`s Tomb, beneath typical scenes and borders of foliage, 8.5cm h, c1820 In order to supplement the rural workforce, the HEIC first shipped indentured Chinese labourers to the island of St Helena in 1810. Ivory card cases were carved by one or several Chinese familiar with carving techniques learned in Canton or Shanghai, shortly after Napoleon`s death in exile on the island in 1821. They found a ready market amongst the many temporary visitors, not least the British garrison and naval sailors then departing as the HEIC resumed full control. In fine undamaged and unrestored condition with some natural yellowing of the ivory and accretion of dust and dirt in the minor detail
