Lot 158

A RARE CHINESE DING ‘DRAGON’ BRUSH WASHER NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY With tall straight sides and a flat base, the interior is elegantly incised to the centre with a roundel of a single dragon amongst freely drawn scrolls encircled by two bands of square scrolls and with a third band to the exterior. The white body covered overall with an ivory-tinged glaze, the rim bound with metal, 18.3cm. Ding ceramics were the earliest true porcelains made in China, and the world. Ding wares were often fired sitting upside down with their weight resting on their rims. This strategy served to spread the weight of the object and to guard against any malformation of their thinly potted bodies during the firing. Because of contact between the rim and the ground of the saggar, the rims were often left unglazed and later covered with metal. This is a typical feature of Ding ware. The steep sides on the present washer appear to reference a metal prototype. Rose Kerr writing on the collection of Song ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, states that the “fact that Ding ware was an official ware made one feature of its decoration especially pronounced. This was its tendency to mimic other, more precious materials such as gold and silver, huge quantities of which were stored in palace treasures”. Cf. Rose Kerr, Song Ceramics, p.102. Cf. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (I), p.88, no.79 for a related Song Dynasty Ding ware washer, see also Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4th April 2017, lot 3216 for a similar Ding dish. 北宋 定窯白釉刻花龍紋洗

Cabinet Louis XIV en corne teintée à l'imitation de l'écaille, incrustations d'ivoire et ébène, en partie de la fin du XVIIe siècle, dans le goût de Pierre GoleA Louis XIV ivory-inlaid red-stained horn simulating tortoiseshell cabinet-on-stand, part late 17th century, in the manner of Pierre GoleOf rectangular form, overall inlaid with geometric outlines, the outer borders and edges of the drawers inlaid with ivory and ebony mouldings, with twelve drawers and a pair of cupboard doors enclosing an architectural interior fitted with nine variously sized drawers and a balustraded interior with checker floor, the stand with faceted legs joined by a box stretcher, on shaped ball feet, some losses to veneer, especially to the stand, 97cm wide, 37.5cm deep, 144cm high (38in wide, 14 1/2in deep, 56 1/2in high). Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a Royal CollectionThis cabinet-on-stand overall inlaid with red-stained horn simulating tortoiseshell and contrasting ivory is related to the work of the celebrated Louis XIV ébéniste Pierre Gole working alongside André-Charles Boulle. With a high visual impact, the modernistic façade with its geometric inlay is particularly attractive, but slightly differs from Gole's oeuvre which often incorporates floral marquetry, pewter and brass inlays, mother-of-pearl and rich ormolu mounts in its cabinets. Furthermore, the inventory after Gole's death lists only thirteen cabinets in his atelier from two hundred finished other lots. These cabinets were elaborate and expensive, making them difficult to sell. Our cabinet-on-stand must have been executed by an ébéniste close to or in the circle of Pierre Gole as there was a high demand for these masterpieces with innovative features and striking looks.Ce lot est soumis aux restrictions de la CITES. A portrait of Penelope Gwatkin, wife of Major-General Edward Gwatkin, by the artist Raja Jivan Ram North India, probably Delhi or Meerut, dated 1826oil on canvas, signed and dated 1826, and inscribed MART lower left, further inscribed on the reverse 35.5 x 33 cm.Footnotes:ProvenancePenelope Gwatkin (1797-1854), the sitter, wife of Major-General Edward Gwatkin (1784-1855), East India Company.Rhoda Lindsay, her daughter (1829-1921), until sometime after 1882.Laura Cunliffe Steel, Rhoda's sister (1833-1920), and the seller's great-great-grandmother.James Steel, Laura's son, and Penelope's great-nephew (1855-1907).Dorothy Steel, the seller's grandmother, and thence by descent. The English inscription on the reverse reads:Penelope Gwatkin, wife of Edward Gwatkin, East India Cpy. Service. This picture of my mother to be given to my sister, Laura Steel, or her son James SteelRhoda Lindsay, 1882for Harold R. SteelPenelope Smith was Gwatkin's second wife (his first, Hetty, had died). They were married in Cawnpore on 21st September 1826 - it therefore seems likely that the portrait was painted to celebrate their marriage. Rhoda was their second child (1829-1921). She too had been previously married, to a Captain Alexander Bannerman, also in Cawnpore, in 1822. She died in October 1854 in Musoorie.Edward died at sea, off the English coast, on board a Royal Navy vessel, returning home after fifty-one years Company service, and after Penelope's death. He had been Superintendent of the Company's Studs, maintaining its supply of mounts.Raja Jivan Ram, who flourished between the 1820s and the 1840s, was greatly used by the British in India for their portraits, done in a European-style naturalistic manner in oil, and also in gouache on ivory. He had a busy period in 1827, painting a number of officers, but he was to be found later painting members of the entourage of the Begum Samru in the 1830s (some of these are now in the Bodleian Library, and in the former Government House, Allahabad, dated 1835). In 1831-32 he was attached to the staff of Lord William Bentinck, and visited the Sikhs, painting a portrait of Maharajah Ranjit Singh. Emily Eden came across him in 1838 at Meerut, where he sketched her brother, the Governor-General, Lord Auckland. Colonel William Sleeman, in his Rambles and Recollections of and Indian Official (1844), recorded that Jivan Ram ('an excellent portrait-painter, and a very honest and agreeable person') had painted the portrait of the Mughal Emperor Akbar II (who reigned until 1837) - although his naturalism was apparently not to the taste of the Emperor's wives, who asked for the shadow under the nose to be removed. The 'Raja' was an honorary title bestowed by the Emperor.Typical of the artist's oils is the dark background, the strong side-lighting, and the use of vermilion for the lips, and red on the cheeks - as seen too in the portrait of Captain Mcmullin (Pasricha, below). Losty traces these features back to Chinnery. In an inscription on a painting dated 1824 (now in a Maryland private collection) he noted that he was a resident of Delhi and was the son of La'lji, apparently the Patna and Delhi artist, a pioneer in European naturalistic style. In another 1824 miniature (see Forge and Lynch 2012, below) he described himself as the son of Bafalji, or Baqalji. Losty observes that William Fraser remarked in 1815 that La'lji was a pupil of Johann Zoffany, which is perhaps the root of the European manner which made its way to Jivan Ram's work. Our painting is, to our knowledge, Jivan Ram's only portrait of a woman. For other examples of his work see J. P. Losty, Of Far Off Lands and People: Paintings from India 1873-1881, Indar Pasricha Fine Arts, London 1993, for an oil on canvas, dated 1827, depicting Captain Robert McMullin at Meerut; Oliver Forge and Brendan Lynch, Indian Painting 1600-1870, New York 2012, pp. 52-53, no. 24, for a small portrait of a Company officer by Jivan Ram on ivory, dated Agra, February 1824; and their Indian Court Painting, New York 2017, no. 31, for an oil on canvas dated 1827, depicting an officer of the Bengal Horse Artillery. A portrait of a British officer, dated 1824, was sold in these rooms: Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 30th March 2021, lot 82. A portrait of Major Bellingham-Smith, of the 11th Light Dragoons, by Jivan Ram, and also dated 1826, was recently sold at Gorringes, East Sussex, 3rd October 2023, lot 212.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ø A WITHERING FIRST-TYPE POCKET MICROSCOPE, CIRCA 1776of standard form with brass-handled accessories comprising diamond-headed scalpel, pricket and tweezers, contained within original cylindrical card case of issue -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) high, IDN: X48FM76XDr. Mill notes:William Withering was a physician in the 18th century who pioneered the use of foxglove digitalis ih cardiac disease He was also a keen botanist and in1776 published”A Botanical Arrangement of all the Vegetables Naturally Growing in Great Britain”. In this work he described a pocket microscope suitable for botanical fieldwork which could be carried in a coat pocket. In Withering's original version the plates were of ivory but the design was rapidly taken up by various makers and brass replaced the ivory. Various changes were introduced and manufacture continued well into the 19th century. Models were generally unsigned and dating is difficult but this one is probably early. Two brass uprights carry three brass plates. The lowest is a ring carrying three small feet. The highest narrow plate accepts the screw in lenses and the middle plate slides on the supports for focussing and has a central recessed aperture which takes an ivory plate- black on one side and white on the other. There are two single lenses which can be used either singly or combined giving three magnifications. There is no provision for transmitted lighting. As in the original version there are four small instruments presemt held in slots in the discs – ivory handled lancet and needle, brass forceps and a reversible needle-bug holder. The microscope slips into a black fish skin covered card case.Fine overall condition. A little rubbing to case.
