German School mid 19th Century- A tortoiseshell and horn snuff box, the lid inset with a miniature portrait of a lady, bust-length, with long dark hair plaited and tied high, wearing drop earrings and a black dress with lace collar:- indistinctly signed bottom right, on ivory, oval miniature 5.3cm, the box 9.5cm.
A Chinese bamboo opium pipe: with ivory end and mouthpiece, the white metal, copper and brass mount set with one faceted and four cabochon stone and glass beads, the hexagonal ceramic bowl carved to the underside with symbols, 63 cm long; together with a glass and metal opium lamp, 9 cm high [2]. *Provenance: Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods and thence by family descent. Roland and Gertrude McAlpine Woods travelled extensively in the Far East in the 1920s and 1930s. On many of their journeys they visited places few Europeans had been to and on one occasion they were the first 'travellers' from the West to visit Yunnan province in China. People travelling for the sake of travelling were largely unknown at that point and in that place. Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods retired to East Devon.
A pair of Chinese ivory small puzzle balls and a similar pendant in the form of a pierced box: the puzzle balls carved and pierced with foliage, each 5 cm high, joined with a tasselled cord; the ivory square pendant with pieced pagoda landscapes to each side, 2 cm and with hardstone bead [2]. Provenance: Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods.
