A previously unrecorded Miniature on Ivory of Louis XVI as Dauphin c.1770 attributed to Peter Adolf Hall (1739-93). In a yellow metal slip, unsigned. The facial features in this miniature are distinctly those of the young Louis. The handling of the fabrics, flesh tones and the dark shaded background broken with areas of greater light strongly suggest the hand of P.A. Hall. The yellow metal slip, which is probably gold and which may once have been of a larger more elaborate frame bears close comparison with yellow metal slip on Hall`s slightly later miniature of Louis as Dauphin, now in the Wallace collection. This miniature apparently shows Louis XVI at between 14 and 16 years of age, making it, so far as we are aware, the earliest known image of him.
