A Complete Set of Sprung Dentures in Gold & Porcelain, English false teeth, c.1850, complete upper and lower plates, upper plate, springs and fittings in 18 carat gold (acid tested 18ct+), teeth in porcelain, the lower plate of gutta-percha or possibly vulcanite, the upper plate in gold with gutta percha (or vulcanite) mounting for the teeth, in oriinal velvet lined wooden case covered in red Morocco leather, case 10.7cm across, gross weight of dentures 57.4 grams. Note: Gutta-percha is recorded as being used for dentures in the UK in 1847; vulcanite, developed in the early 1840's, was also adopted for dentures around this time. The design and structure of these dentures is much the same as the Duke of Wellington's sprung false teeth in gold and ivory, on display at Apsley House, but here using porcelain rather than human teeth, and gutta-percha providing greater comfort than carved ivory. The porcelain teeth are very realistically modelled and in very good condition. The gutta percha has been repaired around the top left incisors and canine, this appears to be an old repair when the teeth were in use. There is a further later repair here where a small crack has been repaired with a white filler (see online images, this could of course be coloured in). There is variation in the colour of the gutta percha, similar to the other examples I have seen. The gold is in good condition, including the springs, which have no kinks and still function as they would have originally. The case shows signs of wear at corners and edges, with minor losses to the leather.
