AN IMPESSIVE PAIR OF SILVER AND IVORY JOUSTING KNIGHTS, PROBABLY GERMAN, 19TH CENTURY. Each finely modeled, cast and repoussed with detailed tool work in the form of two opposing knights in full armor on horseback with extended lances. Carved ivory features revealed behind articulating face plates, with each horse rearing on a sculpted silver ground with extending fern leaves, figural lizards, and frogs above a reticulated foliate plinth. Remnants of gilt throughout. Apparently unmarked. Lot is accompanied with later table lamp fixtures with shaped wooded plinths in which the pieces may be displayed on. Height 13.5 inches (34.3 cm), total weight 106 troy oz.
A VERY FINE PAIR OF CARVED IVORY AND SILVER-GILT GERMANIC KNIGHTS, PROBABLY AUSTRIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Each finely modeled with ornate repoussed armor in the form of Germanic knights, one with a winged helmet with moveable visor and each with traditional weaponry, the faces well carved in ivory and with each figure atop a reticulated silver plinth. Stamped 17th century style German hallmarks. Height 9.5 inches and 11.25 inches (24 and 28.5 cm).
AN EXTREMLY FINE FRENCH NAPOLEAN III DIEPPE CARVED IVORY MANTLE CLOCK, 19TH CENTURY. The rectangular case overlaid completely on four sides with overlapping carved leaf work and figural elements comprising winged putto, grotesque facial masks, crowned seahorses and armorial lions, with circular clock dial centered between two carved and layered armorial crests each above an inscribed ribbon "POUR Y. PARVENIR" (strive to attain) and raised on a sloped carved ivory plinth with carved ivory lions` paw feet. Height 23.75 inches (60.5 cm). This Dieppe motif comprising carved layers of leaves with classical figures and armorial crests was utilized in numerous utilitarian forms including chairs, case furniture, and more commonly, wall mirrors. A FRENCH RENAISSANCE STYLE CARVED IVORY SIDEBOARD CHARGER, 18TH CENTURY. Of oval form with paneled sidewalls and modified scalloped rim, each panel finely carved with mythological scenes in good relief below an applied eight panel extending rim with carved and reticulated scrolled acanthus and winged putti. The coupe center with a carved portrait of King Louis XIV. Later jeweled beading, with silvered metal supports and foot rim on verso. Contained in a 19th century fitted case. Length 15.5 inches (39.5 cm), width 13.5 inches (34 cm), height 4.75 inches (12 cm).
AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND SILVER MOUNTED TANKARD WITH ROMAN BATTLE SCENE, HANAU, CIRCA 1880-1890. The cylindrical form masterfully carved in high relief with a chaotic Roman battle scene of mounted horseman battling Turks below a silver compressed domical cover with embossed and chased horsemen in strapwork reserves and surmounted with a well carved Roman feathered helmet finial. The ivory handle emanating from an elephant head mount, well carved with an amusing seated soldier displaying sword and shield. The shaped silver foot embossed with lounging Roman soldiers within strapwork cartouches, and with later Augsburg marks. Height 16.5 inches (42 cm). A PAIR OF LARGE AND IMPOSING FINELY CARVED IVORY BUSTS OF YOUNG BEAUTIES, FRENCH, 19TH CENTURY. In the manner of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, Each delicately carved with flowers on well-defined curly locks and raised on a square ivory socle base and further raised on a later conforming grey marble plinth. Height of ivory 8.25 inches (21 cm), overall height 11 inches (28 cm).
A VERY FINE FRENCH RENAISSANCE STYLE CARVED IVORY FIGURE OF WOMAN ARISTOCRAT, EARLY 19TH CENTURY. Well sculpted in good detail with plumed hat and lace bodice depicted with a parrot perched on forearm raised on an offset wood plinth within turned balusters. Height of ivory 8 inches (20 cm), overall height 12.5 inches (32 cm).
A VERY FINE SIGNED AND DATED FRENCH CARVED IVORY TRIPTYCH FIGURE OF A NOBLEMAN, 18TH CENTURY. Carved in full round. He holds a helmet with plume, the hinged torso opens to reveal a scene, presumably of death. Exquisite detail throughout, signed on base "A. Corre" and dated "1774". Resting on a wood plinth sitting on an ivory disc. Height of ivory 9.5 inches (24 cm), overall height 11.25 inches (28.5 cm).
AN INTERESTING ENGLISH GOTHIC STYLE CARVED IVORY TRIPTYCH, 19TH CENTURY. This finely carved triptych would appear to be based on the mural painting in the Chichester Cathedral, Chichester, England, West Sussex by Lambert Barnard (1485-1567) as commissioned by Bishop Robert Sherburne in the first part of the 16th century, and later reproduced in print (1807). It depicts the 7th century Wessex King Caedwalla, shown at right on the central panel wearing crown and holding a scepter, confirming rights and territories to Bishop Saint Wilfrid, depicted at left with halo and tonsure and on the same arched central panel. The left wing depicts the Bishop’s entourage, holding his mitre and crosier and the right wing depicts the king’s attendants. Carved in high relief with good proportions, perspective and detailing and later set in a hinged wooden frame with solid back. Height of ivory 12.25 inches (30.5 cm). Overall dimensions 13.6 x 8.75 inches (open) (34.4 x 22 cm).

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CARVED IVORY GOTHIC STYLE VIRGIN AND CHILD, PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY. Carved in full round from a single tusk, the elegant sway of the Virgin`s pose following the natural curve of the tusk. Carved with deep folds, good proportions and cascading hair. The crowned Virgin holds the infant Christ who looks lovingly at his mother and holds an apple in his right hand symbolizing the fruit of paradise that became the cause of Adam`s fall. Resting on a stepped oak base with overhanging ledge, height of carved ivory 22.7 inches (57.5 cm) Overall height including base 27.75 inches (70.5 cm). A stunningly beautiful carving.In Judeo/Christian tradition, the term Ivory Tower is a symbol for noble purity. It originates with the Song of Solomon (7:4) ("Your neck is like an ivory tower"; in the Hebrew Masoretic text, it is found in 7:5) and was included in the epithets for Mary in the sixteenth century Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary ("tower of ivory", in Latin Turris eburnean), though the title and image was in use long before that, since the 12th century Marian revival at least.

A VERY FINE PAIR OF CARVED IVORY PLAQUES, GERMAN, 17TH CENTURY. On the left Saint Ignatius of Loyola adoring the Trinity above him, and trampling Satan who tumbles beneath him. Masterfully carved in high relief with good anatomy, proportions, deep folds and fine detailing. The book held by Ignatius inscribed in Latin with the Jesuit motto, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. On the right, Saint Francis Xavier baptizing the Indian’s. Also masterfully carved in high relief. Each in a later polychrome press molded frame. Verso with framers label of “A. Bilger, Carlsruhe” The carved ivory plaques 5.3 inches in height (13.5cm).

A VERY FINE CARVED IVORY BUST OF LOUISE, AFTER THE ORIGINAL BY EDUARD HOUSSIN (FRENCH 1847- 1917). Raised on a lapis lazuli plinth. Inscribed lower right "E. Houssin Paris". The verso inscribed 301. This bust represents Louise Demont at age six. Louise was the daughter of the painter and friend of Houssin, Adrien Demont, her maternal grandfather was Jules Breton. She later married Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse`s grandson, Albert Ball.
