A late 19th / early 20th century Chinese hardwood desk inlaid with ivory, the rectangular top decorated to the centre with a large highly detailed vignette of birds in flight and perching on blossoming branches, within further inlaid symmetrical motif borders, above a central long panelled frieze drawer flanked by two square panelled drawers, all with cut brass drop handles, decorated to fronts with inlaid vignettes detailing deities, jungle fowl, etc, above a shaped pierced apron with applied decoration detailing objects of the scholar's desk, (the same decoration is mirrored to the back of the piece) flanked by panelled sides with cut-out apertures on straight legs, again highly decorated with strung and further scrolling symmetrical inlaid borders, 80 cm high, the top measuring 60.5 x 119 cm.

A 19th century Vizagapatam ivory and horn chess set, 32 pieces. Height of king 12 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chess set is complete. All pieces are generally in very good order with only very minor bottom edge nibbles and minor stress fractures on the white side with the exception of the following: one castle has a bottom edge chip approx 3 mm x 1.5 mm. The king appears to have been separated from the very bottom section of the base and re-attached. There is some discolouration here but no loss. One Bishop has the very top section of ivory carving missing. This is just the very top tooth. On the black side all pieces are in good order with the exception of the following: one castle has two chips to the points of the lower upward pointed tear. One bishop is missing the top two points. The queen has an edge base chip running for approx 4 mm x 1 mm. One of the knights is a little less well carved than the other and looks to be a later replacement.
