He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1886 and was promoted to Captain in 1897 and Major in 1902. Served in the Matabele War in 1896 (Medal). Served as A.D.C. to Lieutenant-General Sir Baker Russell, 1899-1900 and was special service officer, South African War and D.A.A.G., 5th Division, Natal Field Force. Took part in the relief of Ladysmith, including action at Colenso; the operations of 17th to 24th January 1900, and engagement at Spion Kop; of 5th to 7th February 1900, and action at Vaal Krantz; on Tugela Heights, and action at Pieter’s Hill (mentioned in despatches, Medal with three Clasps). Levita commanded “N” Battery, R.H.A. at the funeral of H.M. Queen Victoria for which he was awarded the M.V.O. 4th Class on 19 March 1901. In the Reserve of Officers, 1909-14. Recalled to service as a General Staff Officer 1st Grade in 1914. Awarded the C.B.E. (Military) in 1919. After the war he served as a member of the London County Council for North Kensington, 1911-37 and was Chairman of the L.C.C., 1928-29. At the end of his term of office he was Knighted for his public and political services. He was Deputy Lieutenant for the County of London and was Justice of the Peace, 1920-50. Appointed a Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1929, and Commander of the Order of St. John in 1930. As originator of the King George Hospital, Ilford, he was awarded the K.C.V.O. on 1 January 1932. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Cecil Bingham Levita died on 10 October 1953. Sold with original bestowal documents for the C.B.E. and M.V.O., 4th Class; a commission document appointing Levita a Lieutenant, 29 July 1886; a fine portrait photograph of the recipient, 293 x 236mm., mounted on card; a group photograph with his fellow officers at Aldershot in July 1901; an appointment on vellum as Deputy Lieutenant of the County of London; and a silver presentation trowel, hallmarked London 1927, with ivory handle, inscribed ‘This trowel was used by Lieut-Colonel Sir Cecil B. A carved ivory kinderbacchanal tankard attributed to Johann Jacob Betzoldt (1621-1701), German circa 1680, the hollowed sleeve shaped lidded tankard externally carved in relief with putti in a Bacchic procession and a chariot drawn by a goat, continental white metal mounted, 18cm high overall (at fault) Footnote; Betzoldt, a carver from Schwabisch Hall, was a student in the school of Leonhard Kern (1588-1662). Betzoldt rose to become a highly regarded ivory "schnitzer", his work having been purchased, circa 1678, by the City of Schwabisch Hall for their public collections. Similar ivory sleeve tankards can be found in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig, (no mounts), the Kunstgewerbe museum, Berlin, inv. no. K3122 (formerly attributed to Leonhard Kern and is now ascribed to Betzoldt), and another carved ivory sleeve by Betzoldt, now with 19th century gilt-silver mounts, in the Musée du Louvre, inv. no. 3895. An Art Deco shagreen jewellery box, circa 1930, the box of rectangular form with hinged cover opening to reveal a velvet lined compartmented interior, 4cm high x 12cm wide x 10cm deep (at fault) Large section of shagreen missing to the side of the cover (please see image) measuring approx. 3m wide. Some additional loss to the lip. Some minor losses to the ivory at contact points. Moderate scratching, wear and tear to the exterior, and some patches of discoloration concentrated around the opening. Some of the screws in the hinge are slightly loose, and the cover does not sit flush to the box. There is heavy wear to the leather base (please see pictures for illustration) and the leather lining is coming away from the base at one of the front corners. Moderate amount of staining to the interior, and heavy wear to the highpoints. Some scratching to the inside wooden cover.
A pair of Coalport porcelain vases and covers, late 19th century, each of inverted baluster form with foliate scrolled handles, shaped foot and floral final to the cover, decorated to one side with a gilt-enclosed vignette of still life fruits signed 'F H Chivers' (Frederick Herbert Chivers 1881-1965), with a smaller unsigned gilt-enclosed vignette to the other, set against a turquoise ground with ivory neck and foot, gilt highlights throughout, green printed maker's mark and inscribed gilt ‘V7636’ and ‘5/5.270’ to bases, each 26cm high (2) (Restored)CONDITION REPORT:Both pieces show extensive fine surface crazing throughout, with some staining to the craze lines. The handles of both vases show evidence of restoration, and one handle shows hairline cracking (probably indicating a historic repair). Both pieces are dirty and would benefit from thorough cleaning. The surface dirt may be masking further evidence of restoration.

Y SIR WILLIAM CHARLES ROSS, R.A., (1794-1860) THE MARCHIONESS OF BREADALBANE, MARY GAVIN CAMPBELL large miniature portrait, oil and bodycolour on ivory, the subject depicted seated in a red upholstered open armchair, her dark hair arranged loosely in ringlets falling across her decolletage, wearing a brown velvet dress edged in lace and blue satin, and adorned with turquoise and pearl mounted jewellery, in a fitted Moroccan leather case(22.9 x 15.9cm sight size)Note: The stylish and striking sitter for this portrait is Mary Gavin Campbell, wife of John Campbell, the 1st Marquess of Breadalbane, whom she married in 1793. After her marriage she was styled Countess of Breadalbane and Holland, and from 1831, Marchioness of Breadalbane. She died in 1845. The miniature portrait is recorded in the Christie, Manson & Woods 1863 Inventory of Taymouth Castle as hanging in the Tapestry Sitting Room, item 446. William Charles Ross artistic talent was recognised and encouraged from an early age by his parents, both of whom were accomplished portrait painters. Ross' glossy style was influenced by Andrew Robertson, to whom he was apprenticed in 1814. In 1817 he established his own studio in London and quickly made a name for himself with prominent commissions. His growing list of important sitters included the prime minister and the queen’s uncle, and in 1837 Queen Victoria herself commissioned a portrait. She declared it ‘very like and very well painted’ and appointed Ross as Miniature Painter to the Queen, a position providing the opportunity to portray sitters from royal families throughout Europe. Ross was knighted in 1842.
