An early 19th c. Mahogany bow fronted Chest of two short over three long graduated Drawers with well figured top over banded frieze, the five Pine and Oak lined drawers having cock beaded edges, Ivory escutcheons and wooden knobs, flanked by two quarter turned rope twist columns with stylised Acanthus carved tops, standing on bun feet, 42 1/4'' wide x 47 1/2'' high x 21 1/4'' deep.
A good antique Mah-Jongg set contained in a five-drawer lift-front hardwood case with metal bound corners and swing carrying handles and including 148 Bamboo backed dovetail joined tiles, 4 dice, 120 bone stick-like counters and a tiny turned drum-shaped lidded box containing four circular pieces with green painted recessed characters. Sold together with a booklet produced by Chad Valley: "Mah-Jongg, sometimes called Sparrow, Rules of the Game and how to play it" and one Hamley Bros and two type-written Score Cards. This Mah-Jongg set is described with a note found accompanying it as Ivory/Bamboo dovetailed and was purchased by the vendor's grandfather, one M.J. Carnegie in Johannesburg in 1935.
