A Georgian naval officer’s dirk, curved flat blade 14”, 1-3/8” at forte, and tapering to double edged point, gilt S shaped crossguard, swollen regulation section ivory grip with flattened edges to diced panels, and with gilt lower band, middle band with anchor engraved oval panel on one side, and pommel, all with wavy line and dot decoration in bands, in its black, patent leather (some wear) sheath with gilt mounts engraved in panels, trophy of arms and flags including Union Flag on shield to top mount, and sunbursts the middle band and chape, 2 hanging rings. A Georgian naval dirk, straight fullered blade 9”, copper gilt shallow inverted cap guard engraved with 2 rings on the top, stem into turned ivory grip with flattened ball pommel, in its black patent leather sheath with line engraved gilt locket, middle band and chape, with 2 suspension rings. Very Good Condition for age, retaining approximately 75% original gilt (blade cleaned, chape dented at tip). Plate 19

A George IV officer’s mameluke sword of The 15th (or the King’s) Light Dragoons (Hussars), curved, flat blade 31½”, by Andrews, 9 Pall Mall, London (the style of the firm 1821-1825), etched on both sides with crown in sunburst and “King’s Hussars”, in panels, copper gilt (some rubbing) crossguard and langets, bud finials, with stylized foliate decoration, engraved ivory grips with floral studs (one missing), gilt knot (some wear) in its fine sheath engraved panelled scabbard, with darkened sharkskin backing, and floral embossed ring mounts, and retaining some original gilt. Good Condition, (minor dark pitting patches to lower part of blade). Plate 22
A good Victorian Army Surgeon’s case of instruments belonging to Deputy Surgeon General Rowland Wimburn Carter (1830-1907), comprising saws, 4 graduated knives, scalpels, tweezers, probes, 2 trepanning instruments, ivory and glass syringe, dental probes and extractors, tourniquet, etc, all contained in their brass bound burgundy velvet lined mahogany case with lift out trays, name in shield on lid “Rowld Wimn Carter, Staff Surgeon, Army”, 10” x 18” x 5” overall; together with full details of Carter’s career from his birth in Cape Town, 1830, qualification and entry to the army, 1854, service in the Crimea, Indian Mutiny, Afghanistan, etc, final promotion and retirement, 1884, and later work in hospitals in Dorset, with particular emphasis on the development of anaesthetics, until his death in 1907. Good Condition (minor wear commensurate with active service). Plate 4
