Stampa, London, early 19th century, with 12 inch scroll-centre engraved circular silvered register calibrated in inches and with the usual annotations beneath 5 inch circular white Roman numeral timepiece dial fronting a single fusee circular four pillar movement with tic-tac escapement and signed Holmden, London to backplate, with arched mercury Fahrenheit thermometer to the shaped trunk and hygrometer to the swan neck pediment with ivory vase finial, the rounded base with spirit level signed L. STAMPA, Kirby Str"t, Hatton Garden, London and setting pointer adjustment square, the case with line-edged crossbanded borders to front edges, 126cm high. L. Stampa is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working circa 1800-20 where it is noted that he seemed to specialise in larger wheel barometers incorporating timepieces. AN INDIAN-COLONIAL ENGRAVED IVORY GAMES BOX, VIZAGAPATAM, 2ND QUARTER 19TH CENTURY rectangular, the chequer board exterior bordered with flowers and foliage, the sandal wood interior inlaid for backgammon centred by flower motifs, 38.5cm high x 40.5cm wide opened; together with a Burmese pattern ivory chess set, Canton, mid 19th century, natural and red stained; and a set of natural and red stained backgammon counters (quantity) By family repute, this box belonged to Reginald Rogers, one of a large family of lawyers and clerics, well known in Truro and the surrounding area throughout the 19th century. Before settling down to practice law in Truro, Reginald Rogers apparently travelled with the East India Company to Madras (just down the coast from Vizagapatam or Vizagapatnam), where he acquired the games box, followed by a stint in Canton, hence the chess set and counters.
