An Italian mother of pearl, ivory and fruitwood inlaid ebony and floral marquetry table top by the Falcini Brothers, the rectangular moulded edge top centred a cartouche with a flower filled urn with butterflies, the corner panels with stylized acanthus cornucopiae issuing flowers and foliage, within a leaf border, Florentine circa 1840, on a later carved ebonised base, the top: 58.75in (149.2cm) w, 28.75in (73.2cm) d, with the base: 26.5in (67cm) h, 60in (153cm) w, 29.5in (74.6cm) d. Some cracks and restoration. Provenance: By family repute this marquetry table top was bought by the vendor`s great grandfather whilst on a tour of Italy around 1840-50. Luigi and Angiolo Falcini were active in Florence during the first half of the 19th century and were celebrated for revitalising the art of marquetry inlay. They gained inspiration from the Dutch emigre cabinet makers employed by the Medici at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure during the 17th century, in particularly the work of Leonardo van der Vinne (d.1713). The use of exotic woods, mother of pearl and ivory are characteristic of their stye and are used to great effect in this table. A very similar table top can be seen at the Galeria d`Arte Moderna, Palazzo Pitti museum Florence, and is illustrated in Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, La Toscana e l`Italia Settentrional,, Vol. II, Milan, 1986, fig. 388.
