A LATE 17TH CENTURY ENGLISH COMBINATION PLUG BAYONET AND HUNTING HANGER, 51cm blade, double edged towards the tip, etched with a neo-classical panel at the forte, marked to the centre with the figure of a Moor, highlighted in gilt, brass hilt, the crossguard with helmeted bust terminals, pommel finial decorated to match, ring turned ivory grip. The head of a Moor was used as a mark by Abraham Smith. For a similar example with identical quillons and pommel see Christies lot 21 16th December 2003 realised £1,195 and Martel Maides lot 536 11th December 2019 realised £1,200.

A GEORGIAN SWORD TO COMMODORE DANCE, 80.5cm flattened diamond section fullered blade, gilt washed hilt with upturned shell guard, engraved to the interior with opposing panels of stands of arms, the D-shaped knuckle guard broadening at the midpoint and with oval plaque engraved COMMODORE SIR NATHANIEL DANCE to one side and R.E.I.V to the other, flattened lion's head pommel, reeded ivory grip. Commodore Sir Nathaniel Dance was most famous for averting the certain destruction of a large and valuable convoy by the use of deception and daring - for which he was awarded a Knighthood. Together with AFTER WILLIAM SALTER (1804-1875 BRITISH), Three quarter length portrait of Colonel Sir Charles Dance K.H. after the original study for "The Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House 1836", oil on canvas, 52 x 42cm, in gilt gesso frame. Tears. The banquet was held at Apsley House on the anniversary of Waterloo - the original large painting hangs at Apsley House, London, while the studies are at the National Portrait Gallery, London and ENGLISH SCHOOL (EARLY 19TH CENTURY), Shoulder length portrait of Commodore Sir Nathaniel Dance, oil on canvas, 58.5 x 49cm, in giltwood and gesso frame. A rare late 16th century German oval ivory diptych-dial, the upper inner leaf with tangent circles and inscribed 1593, the lower leaf (lacking its glass cover and string gnomon) housing a dry-card paper compass, beneath hour lines marked with Roman numerals, the upper outer leaf with a brass nocturnal, a small external catch keeps the lid open when in use, probably Nuremberg, width 39mm depth 48mm length 48mmCONDITION: Ivory stained and discoloured particularly in two patches to the underside and dirty to the top, metal mounts evenly oxidised, compass dial rubbed and looks like it was once glazed but this is now lacking.

A Jaques London red and white ivory 3 1/2" Staunton chess set, c.1850, with Carton Pierre casket, kite marks for 1st March 1849 8.25 x 6 x 4in.CONDITION: Casket looks to be in good order, with red velvet showing through the lid, green velvet to the interior with tooled gilt leather around the edge of the interior of the lid, later support straps have been fixed in place, no label to the casket, lid with very slight upward bulge at the front.Red - tiny areas of flaking to the cross finial of the king, tiny chips to the tips of the Queen's crown, both bishops a little faded and dirt speckled, one has the green kite mark sticker, minute chipping around the horses ears, black crown stamp to one of them which also has the green kite sticker, one castle with black crown stamp to the top which also has a green kite sticker, pawns all look good, two have green kite labels.White - King with JAQUES LONDON stamp to base, Queen with several crown points broken away, both bishops with green kite label, one knight with black crown stamp to head the other with green label, one castle with crown stamp to top, both with green labels, one pawn with tiny chip to ring collar, also has a green label.

A 19th century Muslim ivory chess set, the two sides with engraved red and brown geometric motifs, kings 2in.CONDITION: Red - King has lost it's finial, otherwise good order although some of the red inlay is rather faded, all pieces except for the pawns have black rings to the underside which are partially erodedBrown - chipped section away from the top finial of the Queen, hairline crack to the base of one of the bishops, sections missing from the edges of the rosette finials of the castles, similar black marks to the underside of the main pieces, some fading to the coloured decoration.

A Jaques London red and white ivory 2¾" Staunton chess set, c.1850, with original Carton Pierre casket, 8.25 x 6 x 4in.CONDITION: Casket a little worn, lid is almost completely detached, chipped and broken away at the front right corner, castellations around the top are broken away at the corners, what looks to be the original red fabric showing through is now very faded and split, green baize to the underside is later, interior with purple velvet looks original with original tooled gilt black leather banding around the inside of the lid.Red - overall a little faded in places with one or two tiny spots where the white of the ivory is showing through, one knight with crown stamp to head, one castle with crown stamp to top, one pawn with tiny chip to collar, another pawn looks to have had its finial reattached and another pawn has a replacement composition finial.White - one bishop with chip to foot rim, one knight with black crown stamp to head, one castle with black crown stamp to top, one pawn with tiny chip to foot ring, all white pieces with a rather grubby appearance.Comes with an old card and leather folding chess board, 15.75 x 8in. when closed.

A rare Chinese bamboo-veneer (tiehuang) shaped square box and cover, Qianlong period (1736-95), the cover with re-entrant corners, carved in relief with 'chilong' amid scrolling tendrils inlaid with turquoise flower heads, within key work scrolling tendril borders, the sides with flowering branches, with golden to chestnut brown patina, silk brocade lining, caramel to chestnut brown patina, 20cm square, faults.Provenance - Dr J W H Grice (1891-1976) collection, labelled no.8. Cf. a large turquoise-inlaid bamboo-veneer box and cover, Qianlong period (1736-1795) sold for 860,000 HKD by Sotheby's, Hong Kong, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 8 April 2011, Lot 3329, similarly set with turquoise flower heads.CONDITION: The cover and base are slightly warped so no longer fit properly. A number of the inlaid turquoise flowers are missing. The cover is grubby with small losses, fine cracks and lifting to the veneer. The base has lost most of the inner flange and has fine cracks and lifting to the veneer.ProvenanceDr John William Hawksley Grice (1891-1976) is regarded as a very important collector of carving in Britain; at the time he was collecting, he appears to have been unique among his peers for admiring Qing dynasty carvings. He wrote about 'Chinese Bamboo Carving' in Country Life in 1954, one of the first articles in English on the subject, and at the time he was collecting he appears to have been unique among his peers for admiring late carving. Dr Grice and his wife Kathleen moved to China in 1922 and he worked as a doctor in Tianjin for 30 years. He gave a sizeable proportion of his carved bamboo collection to London's Victoria and Albert Museum and donated other ivories and bamboo to the British Museum.

Provenance - Dr J W H Grice (1891-1976) collection, label no.37. This wrist rest is illustrated in Dr Grice's article 'Chinese Bamboo Carving' in Country Life magazine in 1954.CONDITION: Small old splinter to the two top corners and to the bottom edge with patina to the areas.Provenance - Dr John William Hawksley Grice (1891-1976) is regarded as a very important collector of carving in Britain; at the time he was collecting, he appears to have been unique among his peers for admiring Qing dynasty carvings. He wrote about 'Chinese Bamboo Carving' in Country Life in 1954, one of the first articles in English on the subject, and at the time he was collecting he appears to have been unique among his peers for admiring late carving. There are numerous tiny chip losses to the rim. There is a V-shaped section to the rear of the cup with splits each side. A fine and rare Chinese bamboo-root 'boys and fish bowl' brush washer, 18th/19th century, carved in the round from a bamboo-root node with two boys crouching at a fish bowl one holding a gourd and the other grasping two fish from the water, the sides of the bowl carved in high relief with rockwork and flowering shrubs, with caramel brown patina, 8.5cm wide, 5.2 cm high, tiny losses.Provenance - Dr J W H Grice (1891-1976) collection.CONDITION: Small losses to the tail of the fish in one boy's right hand, the flowers at the side of the fish bowl.
