It was a member of the Crequi family who built the chateau in the late 17th century. The more recent owners, during the late 19th and early 20th century amassed a significant and impressive collection of paintings, furniture, porcelain, tapestries and objets d’art. In 1903, the family moved to England and sold off many of the important items, however, a notable amount remained, and were used to decorate their new, North Yorkshire country house. These items were then placed under the hammer, after over one hundred years, by Tennants in 2005.IMPORTANT NOTEThis lot contains elephant ivory material. A couple of losses to the frieze. Some polished-in dents and scuffs throughout. Some splits to ivory inlay. Inlay appears to be complete.
