Ø A VERY RARE FRENCH IVORY AND SILVER CRUCIFIX DIAL AND RELIQUARY, POSSIBLY DIEPPE, CIRCA 1600 OR EARLIER, the outer surfaces incised with depictions of the crucifixion, and Mary holding the Christ Child flanked by cherubs, the sides divided for ante and post meridian hours, the inside containing a 7mm. glazed painted compass with needle, gilt painted latitude list on blue ground, engraved silver hinge at base with silver latitude scale and support, six reliquary compartments behind, the cross arms decorated with flowers, securing hook and suspension loop to top -- 25?8in. (6.7cm.) high, Apparently unsigned or marked for a maker, the distinctive French Royal Blue and gilt latitude list appears to only list French towns, and matches those on slightly later dials (see M. Cowham’s A Dial in your Poke, Henry Ling Ltd, p.56-8). The unusual compartments behind the hinged silver latitude scale are recessed for (missing) glass covers and may have been intended for holy relics.
