A Chinese export Mandarin fan, c.1860, with carved tortoiseshell sticks and deeply carved tortoiseshell guardsticks, the rivet with loop and tassel, the paper leaf painted on both sides with mandarins, scholars etc, their faces of ivory and their clothes of silk, 28cm (11in). The fan displayed in double-sided case with base which has the supplier's label (Duvelleroy). Some splits at folds of leaf and old repairs to both guardsticks.
