A 19TH-CENTURY FRENCH SHELL-MOUNTED TERRACOTTA BUST OF A FISHERMAN BY P.A. GRAILLONdepicted within an Emperor Helmet shell, in waterproofs, smoking a pipe, mounted on original terracotta base, now set within a glass dome (pipe later) — 10in. (25.5cm) high Pierre Adrien Graillon (1790-1872) born to the family of Dieppe ivory carvers, but was skilled at modelling in other media too. An astute observer of nature and every day life, he specialised in character figures, portraying ordinary people such as beggars, children and also the seamen offered here.

Tverskoy, circa 1850, shaped rectangular form, engraved with engine turned and foliate decoration, with three coloured blue enamel decoration, and multi-coloured enamel decoration, the hinged cover with a scroll thumb-piece, length 9.8cm, approx. weight 5oz.
