Lot 79

An anonymous grand piano now a harpsichord, circa 1785 The case, veneered in carefully chosen mahogany, elaborately cross-banded and inlaid, with rosettes in the corners of the panels. Raised on a trestle stand with four square tapered legs inlaid with fruitwood stringing. The cross-banded keywell veneered with panels of burr walnut and geometric stringing. The five octave keyboard FF/GG-f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. At present set up with three rows of plastic harpsichord jacks, this instrument appears to have been converted from a piano The instrument had an action accessed from underneath in a manner only used by Crang Hancock. The case has been lengthened whilst in Colt's ownership. The extant examples of Crang Hancock grand pianos are all relatively short, so it may have been lengthened in the misbelief that it had at some stage been reduced in length. Raised on four turned and reeded legs with carved acanthus tops. Gilt case handles in the form of lions' masks. The rosewood cross-banded nameboard profusely inlaid with a brass foliate surrounded plaque inscribed: Kirkman, London, Patent. The patent referred to is Patent No 4068, registered on October 14th 1816 for "An improved method of applying an octave stop to pianofortes." The six octave keyboard CC-c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. Two lyre mounted pedals. The right pedal controlling dampers, the left pedal shifting the action to control the use of the 'octave stop'. The instrument has a third bridge dedicated to this 4-foot stop.
