Native American, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Eskimo, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved walrus ivory tool, possibly a harpoon counterweight or a small breast yoke to help carry heavy packs, with openwork between the faces for weaving cord or sinew. The upper face is finely incised with an abstract avian visage flanked by wings, probably representing the revered Thunderbird. A large early 19th. century Dieppe ivory and ebony centrepiece in the form of a figure of Queen Elizabeth I holding globe and sceptre (sceptre top missing) standing on an ebony globe with ivory mounts and fleur de Lys over sphinx supports, the figure opening to reveal a triptych of the queen and her courtiers, the globe opening on the equator showing two scenes, the lower one of the queen at Tilbury, the upper one with small ships greeting her return to London after the Armada.
