Native American, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Eskimo, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved walrus ivory tool, possibly a harpoon counterweight or a small breast yoke to help carry heavy packs, with openwork between the faces for weaving cord or sinew. The upper face is finely incised with an abstract avian visage flanked by wings, probably representing the revered Thunderbird. A Chinese export ivory 'Burmese' pattern chess set, 19th century, with carved red stained and natural ivory pieces, the king and queen both with regal faces on open carved upper section, the king with fleur-de-lys knop, 4½in. (11.4cm.) high, and the queen with a cross, both unscrew into four sections, the knights carved as horse's heads with reins and crest swept to the right, the rooks as open carved turrets surmounted by a billowing flag, unscrews into 4 sections, the bishops carved as clerics with vertical split mitres, unscrew into three pieces, within box with individual lined compartments, together with more modern board, 16½in. An ivory toothpick case of oblong form, inlaid with rose gold and tortoiseshell decoration, the central oval reserve scene with seed pearl and wire beehive on guilloche enamel background under convex glass, rose gold push button release and hinge, opening to reveal tarnished mirror over green velvet lining, 3½in. A large early 19th. century Dieppe ivory and ebony centrepiece in the form of a figure of Queen Elizabeth I holding globe and sceptre (sceptre top missing) standing on an ebony globe with ivory mounts and fleur de Lys over sphinx supports, the figure opening to reveal a triptych of the queen and her courtiers, the globe opening on the equator showing two scenes, the lower one of the queen at Tilbury, the upper one with small ships greeting her return to London after the Armada. Ht. figure 14cm., overall 28.5cm.
