An early Victorian bow front tortoiseshell tea caddy, with two internal lidded compartments, on ball feet, height 17cm, width 18.5cm.Provenance:Alan Bennett (1930-2021) was an enormously respected, Cornwall-based antiques dealer.Alan Bennett started working in the antiques trade in the early 1950s for Parker’s of Blackheath before joining Harrod's Antiques Department. He moved to Cornwall in 1954 and opened his own shop, gradually expanding and offering one of the largest selections of antiques in Cornwall. He was assisted in the business by his wife Winifred, son Justin, and a team of restorers. He retired in April 2007.He was a man of refined manners, always impeccably dressed and he bought pretty, elegant things across the board, Dresden china and pierced silver Bon-Bon baskets but also brightly coloured Staffordshire figures, although it was the furniture that really fed his passion and he specialised in good quality Georgian and later furniture.David Lay reminiscences: "He would sit in the front row bidding with awesome discretion. Nothing as vulgar as a nod or wink. His demeanour told me he was bidding but of course, I knew his taste. I knew when he “should” be bidding. Often Winifred would view with Alan, the perfect couple.Happy memories of a different age. "Through his 50 years in the trade, he amassed an eclectic collection of very good quality art and antiques, many of which we are delighted to be offering here at Lays Auctions across various sales.Condition report: The hinges have been broken off and crudely repaired in the past. Fading to the slik painitng on the inside of the box. The seal has fracture lines on the handle and collection of dirt. The ivory tassel for the fan is serperate but provided. Loss to some of the faces on the silk fan and slight fading to colour and decoration. Slight creasemarks in the fan at the folds which has removed the paint and casued slight tears at the top. A DEHUA 'CRAB AND LOTUS' WASHER AND WATERDROPPER, EARLIER QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. Well potted as a lotus leaf borne on an elegantly curved stalk forming the spout of the waterdropper, of lobed form and supported on three short feet, the interior with a small crab. Covered overall with a soft glaze of ivory tone.Provenance: Collection of Erik Dons, thence by descent. Erik Dons (1915-2002) was a Norwegian diplomat. He served as ambassador to Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines from 1956 to 1959, and to the People's Republic of China from 1959 to 1964. A YIXING POTTERY 'LOTUS AND FROG' TEAPOT, LATE QING TO REPUBLICChina, 1850-1949. Delicately potted as a large lotus leaf with a short stem to the base. The handle formed by two curled lotus stems terminating in blossoms to either side. The similarly modeled cover with a handle in the form of a stem and surmounted by a frog. The interior with a strainer and covered in a finely crackled ivory-white Guan type glaze.Inscriptions: To one side with a signature within an oval reserve. Provenance: From a private collection in New York, USA.Condition: Good condition with minor old traces of use and some wear, which may partially have been skillfully simulated by the potter. Minimal firing irregularities, as well as few minuscule nicks, minor chips, and small losses.Weight: 187.0 g Dimensions: Length 16.5 cm (spout to handle)Expert's note: Reputedly, the subject of 'lotus and frog' in Yixing pottery originally goes back to Chen Mingyuan, one of the most famous and versatile Yixing potters, who was active during the Kangxi/Yongzheng periods (1662-1735). A CARVED CYLINDRICAL JADE BEAD, LIANGZHU CULTUREChina, circa 3300-2200 BC. The tubular bead is carved in form of a cylinder with two finely incised masks, each with slightly raised features, including round eyes incised within ovals joined by a wide bridge above a short bar-shaped mouth, a channel drilled from both ends. The opaque stone is covered extensively with white alteration, lustrous and ivory-white in color, with ochre suffusions.Provenance: From a private estate in New York City, USA.Condition: Good condition with ancient wear, one small chip on the top and at the bottom edge possibly smoothened, small nicks here and there. The stone with calcifications, weathering, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks over time.
