Sabin 62572. In 1773, Phipps was appointed Commander of an expedition to discover whether the Arctic Ocean might be free of ice in the open sea, and in consequence provide a route to the Pacific. His expedition proved otherwise, although his detailed scientific reports provided highly useful information, including the first European description of the polar bear and the ivory gull. On board the Carcass was a young midshipman by the name of Horatio Nelson. (1)
