Impressive Aubusson carpet, France, circa 1850, 20ft. 7in. X 12ft. 5in. 6.27m. X 3.78m. Overall fading; some surface marks in places; minor splits to seams in a few places with some minor fraying. Any crease marks evident in the images of this carpet are purely the result of long term storage. Garland of summer flowers to the centre within a meandering foliage frame to the pale coloured field; ivory main border with cartouches of flowers and in the corners.Tape to all edges verso and lined. . Provenance: By repute purchased from C. John Rare Carpets in 1969 and purchased by the present owners in 1978.

Magnificent American Saruk carpet, north west Persia, circa 1920s, 18ft. X 9ft. 1in. 5.49m. X 2.77m. Very slight wear in some places with corrosion to browns. Note: The added fringes have protected the original ends. The terracotta field with all over large sprays of flowers and various floral arrangements, the cascading flowers drawn with a lightness of hand enhancing the overall design. Dark blue main border of cascading flowers and palmettes within terracotta and dark blue floral guards and pale yellow narrow guards. Close clipped velvety wool finely woven in a rich palette of many colours including pale yellow, greens, blues and ivory. Soft handle. Provenance: Purchased by the present owner in New York in the early 1980s.

Red shield-shape field with dark blue centre medallion with inner Qashqa'i emblem repeated in the dark blue spandrels; horses head column to each side of the centre medallion; all over angular flowers and small boteh motifs with birds hiding in the spandrels; ivory flowerhead and leaf main border. Robust handle.
Exquisite Chinese silk embroidered altar frontal (tokwi) for a domestic altar, late 19th/early 20th century, 22in. X 21in. 56cm. X 53cm. The salmon pink silk ground (now faded to a beige) very finely embroidered in coloured silks and fine metal threads with figures in a rural landscape; a pale yellow stag at the base among flowers and auspicious objects, pair of cranes in flight with a setting sun in the top left corner. A hanging upper panel of three squares above, each depicting a different figure among flowers and various objects embroidered on pale blue silk ground within narrow border; ivory border to the main embroidery worked with individual endless knot motifs; the top with brocaded silk edging; salmon pink brocaded lining and coloured silk plaited fringing to the base. Provenance: A hand-written family note addressed to 'Betty' declares: 'This embroidery was bought by my parents from Chinese travellers about 1906 and was thought to be some of what was looted after the Boxer risings (1890-1900??)'
Japanese silk crepe kimono, shoes and slippers, circa 1950s, the ivory kimono printed with brightly coloured flowers and foliage with gold coloured metal thread trim; lined with ivory silk with a broad band of red silk lining, printed with butterflies, to the hem. Together with pink and silver brocaded open toed shoes and cotton slippers with fleece lining. (5)
Konya kelim, central Anatolia, late 19th century, 12ft. 5in. x 4ft. 10in. 3.78m. X 1.47m. Some wear with corrosion to blacks/browns. Small holes and repairs; losses to ends. Two widths joined vertically. The field composed of horizontal bands of goemetric motifs, divided by narrow geometric stripes; ivory main border of meandering 'ribbon' and feather edged geometric motifs. Good range of colour in a soft palette.
Two Chinese silk embroideries, late 19th/early 20th century, the first, ivory silk damask ground embroidered in silks and gold coloured metal thread with flowers and foliage, within a dark blue silk embroidered border, 20in. X 10in. 51cm. X 26cm. Framed and glazed as a two-handled tray. The second, beige ground silk embroidered with flowers and foliage and butterflies in shades of blue within a black silk embroidered border, 27 1/2 in. X 12in. 70cm. X 30cm. Framed and glazed. (2)

The field composed of broad horizontal bands each featuring two large hooked medallions; with various small ornaments; ivory outer border of foliate design. Soft palette.

The ivory field with three columns of large squares in light terracotta; dark blue and terracotta and black each with a variety of hooked and trellised ornaments; the squares within an ivory lattice of small stars. Soft palette.
Two Ersari Turkmen torba faces of Salor design, south west Turkmenistan, early 20th century, the first, 1ft. 5in. X 3ft. 7in. 0.43m. X 1.09m. Moth damage in places with bites to lower elem and to selvedges. Central large medallion above four kejebe motifs; dark blue small medallion main border. The second, 1ft. 3in. X 3ft. 4in. 0.38m. X 1.02m. Small spots of old moth damage; slight loss to lower elem. All over diagonal rows of small medallions in the field; ivory medallion main border. (2)
Ersari Turkmen ensi, south west Turkmenistan, early 20th century, 6ft. 3in. X 4ft. 5in. 1.91m. X 1.35m. Overall even wear with small repairs and small spots of re-weaving; slight losses to lower end. The four rectangular panels divided by a horizontal panelled bar with a star and boteh mihrab between each pair of panels in the centre; within an ivory curled leaf border on three sides and across the middle; mid-blue boteh inner guard; main border of stars and hooked motif; outer sainak motif outer guard to three sides leading to the lower elem of a row of tall flowering plants. Rich palette including a deep greeny/blue with yellow and ivory details; soft handle. cf. Jourdan, U. op. cit. p. 276, pl. 249 for an example with a similar inner curled leaf border.
Yomut Turkmen dyrnak gul carpet, (reduced in length) Turkmenistan, early 20th century, 8ft. 10in. X 6ft. 1in. 2.69m. X 1.86m. Some wear in places; patches in places and repairs to top end. Reduced in length by horizontal cut at top end of field within the ivory inner guard; slight loss to lower end. The dark terracotta field with all over dyrnak guls within an ivory curled leaf main border; the elems at each end with a version of the erre gul. Rich palette and soft handle.
Attractive Ersari Turkmen 3 x 6 gulli-gul carpet, north east Afghanistan/south west Turkmenistan, late 19th century, 11ft. 9in. X 8ft. 4in. 3.58m. X 2.54m. Slight wear in places with small holes to each flatweave end. The major guls divided by dark blue skeletal medallions with ivory details; main border of trellised medallions within typical dark blue and mid-blue boteh guards; pale green detail to main border left side centre; narrow band of small winged motifs each end in dark blue and pale green; the band at the lower end with pale yellow and ivory centre details; wide kelim ends of narrow bands. Lustrous wool, rich palette and soft handle. Provenance: Purchased by the present owner from an eminent rug trader in Australia in 2001.

Light red field with three large Lenkoran motifs outlined in ivory and pale blue with pale gold lozenge centres; the lower medallion featuring a tribesman 'au naturel'; wide ivory floral medallion main border; serrated edge and striped narrow guards.
