ϒA French Gothic sculpted ivory group of the Madonna and Child, late 15th century, the Virgin portrayed as standing, crowned and draped, the Christ Child held in Her left hand, 19cm high; atop a later stepped circular socle, the overall height 22cm Offered with Radiocarbon Dating Measurement Report by RCD Lockinge, carried out in 2017 Also documentation, a photograph and a negative dating to the late 1970s, including valuation correspondence from Christie Manson & Woods PROVENANCE Previously in the collection of the late Professor Charles Reginald Dodwell, Pilkington Professor of History of Art and Director of Whitworth Gallery, Manchester University 1966-89; and thence by descent EXHIBITED Almost certainly exhibited at the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, Medieval and early Renaissance treasures in the North West, 15 January ~ 28 February 1976. This is alluded to in a typed letter included with the lot CATALOGUE NOTE There is much about this ivory group to suggest an earlier dating, perhaps to the later 14th century, although the radiocarbon dating must of course be categorical. Very close comparison can be drawn for instance with a 14th century French ivory group held at the Wallace Collection in London (S253). In that example the similarities are numerous and diverse, ranging from the style of crown worn by the Virgin (with trefoil finials still in place, -sadly missing in the example offered here), to the treatment of her hand supporting the Christ Child. The overall arrangement is almost identical, the Wallace Collection example differing only in the positioning of the Virgin's right hand, and very close comparison can be drawn with the form and fall of the drapery too, although the developments away from static depictions of the interaction between the Virgin and Christ, to a more lively composition incorporating the Gothic sway or twist, and less formalised folds, were by this time generic Perhaps the most striking similarity though is in the treatment of the head and face of the Christ Child. Where it was the norm to portray the infant Christ with the features of a mature man anyway, in these examples the parallel is quite singular. This can also be said of an example held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. That ivory group, (accession number 17.190.170) is also ascribed an earlier date -circa 1350; and still relatively close comparison can be drawn with an earlier example at the Louvre in Paris, the Sainte-Chapelle group (OA 57). Dating to the second half of the 13th century, the treatment of the facial features and hair, as well as the positioning and arrangement of the Christ Child is notably corresponding Further comparison with earlier work can be drawn from the Virgin of Paris, a famed sculpted limestone group of the Madonna and Child at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The face of the Virgin, the treatment of her hair beneath the crown, the folds of the drapery beneath her hair, and again, the arrangement and treatment of the Christ Child, his face, hair and hands are all so similar to those of the ivory offered in this lot Interestingly then, and despite the point that ultimately, the radiocarbon dating cannot be questioned, on purely stylistic grounds it could reasonably be postulated that the ivory offered here is of an earlier date, perhaps illustrating how developments in form and style quickly became generic and accepted Also see Sotheby's Paris, Important Mobilier, Sculptures et Objets d’Art, 30th September 2011, lot 7 Also Sotheby's London, Mediaeval and Renaissance Works of Art from the Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger, 13th December 1979, lot 25 ϒ Indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported.
